• Patient Education Considerations

ALBUT EROL (V EN T OLI N , PROAI R) Drug Class: Beta-adrenergic agonists, Beta2 agonists, bronchodilators o Mechanism of Action: Albuterol is a short-acting beta agonist (SABA) inhaler. It relaxes the bronchial smooth muscle, which causes dilation of the bronchi and bronchioles that are narrowed and increased airflow. o Drug Administration and Dosage -Follow manufacturer€s instructions for using delivery devices. -Use short-acting preparations for long-term control. -Inhale Albuterol before inhaling glucocorticoids. Follow dosage limits and schedules. -Inhalation aerosol dosage: 4 years +, two puffs every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Less than 4 years consult doctor. -Nebulizer solution: 0.083%, 0.5% 1.25mg/3mL 0.63mg/3mL Oral: 2-4mg per day.

o Nursing Management o Drug Interactions Beta-adrenergic blockers reduce the effectiveness of beta2-adrenergic agonists. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants increase the risk of hypertension. Tachycardia and angina. Hypoglycemia drugs require increased dosing because of hyperglycemic effects. o Lab effects/interference Allergy to albuterol or levalbuterol o Special Considerations Albuterol may significantly change patient€s blood pressure, heart rate, or pulse and make heart condition worse. Precaution with patients with diabetes, Albuterol can make their blood sugar control worse. If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor about whether this drug is safe for you. o Potential Side Effects/Adverse Effects/Toxicities Nervousness, restless, tremor Vascular headache Rebound congestion with nasal inhalation.

o Patient Education Considerations Take as prescribed. Report chest pain and heart palpitation. Avoid caffeine. Notify provider if tremor occurs. o Patient Assessment -Assess Patient€s vital signs, weight; skin color, turgor; orientation, reflexes, ECG, adventitious sounds; blood and urine glucose, serum electrolytes, thyroid function tests. -Assess hypersensitivity history to albuterol; tachyarrhythmias, tachycardia caused by digitalis intoxication; hypertension; coronary insufficiency; history of CVA; COPD patients who have developed degenerative heart disease; diabetes mellitus; hyperthyroidism; history of seizure disorders; psychoneurotic individuals; lactation. o Side Effects/Adverse Effects/Toxicities • Nervousness, restless, tremor • Vascular headache, cough • Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, change in taste. o Special considerations Precaution with patients with: overactive thyroid gland, diabetes, a metabolic condition where the body cannot adequately use sugars called ketoacidosis, diabetes, HTN, excess body acid, seizures....
