Description

Unilever was founded on January, 1st 1930 by the merger of the Dutch margarine company Margarine Unie (Leverd family) and soap maker Lever Brothers (founded by William Hesketh Lever), forming one of the first multinational consumer goods companies. Thus, Unilever became overtime an Anglo-Dutch multinational, headquartered in London, England until 2018 and in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Present in more than 100 countries, it is considered as the fourth-largest player in 2010, behind Nestlé, PepsiCo and CocaCola Company, the agri-food market, and the leading ice cream producer and of tea in the world. Unilever brands are grouped into four broad categories: Drinks and ice creams : Ben & Jerry's, Miko Alimentary : Knorr, Maille, Maïzena, Care of the person : Dove, Monsavon, Rexona, home maintenance: Omo, Skip, Sun. In 2013, the company employs 174,000 people with a turnover of 49.8 billion euros. On March 15, 2018, following the Brexit, the firm announced that it is moving from a bi-national status to two entities, to one, based in the Netherlands. It currently employs 7,300 people in the United Kingdom, where it ranks third among companies in the United Kingdom and 3,100 in the Netherlands. The Anglo-Dutch giant of food and cosmetics Unilever announced that its head office would leave London to be grouped in a single legal entity in the Netherlands. He said in a statement that the people he employs in the United Kingdom, as well as the one’s in the Netherlands, will not be affected by this decision, which comes about a year before Brexit. The abandonment of London's head office is a blow to Theresa May's conservative government, which is struggling to convince companies to stay or come to the UK despite Brexit's uncertainties.

But the company wants to stay in the European Union. This is in any case what asserts Jos Versteeg, analyst in Amsterdam: "I think they opted for a Dutch legal entity because of Brexit because it is better to be inside the EU ". Also, Unliver explains that they also want to have only one head office. This would allow them to strengthen and simplify its structure, ultimately creating more value for its shareholders....
