Part 2 Answer the questions below based on knowledge gained at your College Kick-off. If the an item was not discussed in the College Kick-off, review the GCU website for further information.

What are the clubs, learning communities or professional organizations specific to your program? How likely are you to join one of these organizations? Which one interests you the most, why? (minimum 100 words)

Some of the clubs or learning communities that are specific to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences are the Speech and Debate Team, the Psychology Club, and the Canyon Counselors club. The likelihood of me joining one of these programs depends on my student worker schedule, which has not been solidified yet. However, if I were to join one of these programs, it would most likely be the Speech and Debate Team. I have always enjoyed healthy debates and have a public speaking background, so the advertisements for this team entice me quite a lot. Considering my work schedule permits, I wouldn’t mind trying out the Speech and Debate Team.

Set and share a goal for how you will become involved in a learning community, club, or organization. Discuss how involvement in these types of groups could positively affect you as a student? (minimum 100 words)

The club I have already committed to at GCU is the Hip-Hop Club. Dance is one of my biggest passions, and I was scared coming into college from California that I may have to give it up due to a lack of opportunities in Arizona. When I saw their booth at the club rush, I immediately signed up and was filled with excitement. Their first dance workshop was last Monday, and I was thrilled to be able to dance again. Being an incoming freshman from another state, I feel that being part of this club will prove to connect me with other individuals who share the common interest of dance.

What do you need to achieve academically to be successful in the future? Are there any GPA requirements, volunteer hours, or internships associated with your future career goals? (minimum 100 words)

In order to ensure my academic success, I am going to do my absolute best to work as hard as I can to keep my grades up. One of my goals is straight A’s throughout my college experience, and I will do whatever I can in my power to keep my grades as high as I can. In terms of my future career goal, I seek to implement change in policy to lessen the racial oppression of people of color. In order to do so, I will most likely need to have some type of influence in office, whether it be holding a position or lobbying. To attain these positions, internships in the political field will be extremely beneficial.  GCU Mission and Vision:

The five mission competencies of GCU are Global Citizen, Critical Thinker, Effective Communicator, Responsible Leader, and that the Mission must be seen from the context of the Christian Heritage. To be a global citizen, one must be accepting and tolerating of all other individuals who come from different backgrounds and heritages in not only an academic manner, but also a community manner. To be a critical thinker, you must use logic and reason to inquisitively pursue knowledge and avoid being swayed by false ideas. An effective communicator is one who has mastered communication skills and is able to convey their thoughts and ideas clearly. To be a responsible leader means to maek decisions and stand by them, as well as selflessly assist others in their strive for success. To see the mission from the context of the Christian heritage, one must live by “kindness, service, and integrity”.

 GCU’s Christian Identity and Heritage GCU has been rooted in Christianity since its founding in 1949. The university identifies itself as a missional community as a result of its Christian identity.

List the steps you would take, and anyone you may need to contact in order to resolve the following situations:

 Failing a class: If I’m failing a class, I will approach the instructor for extra help, and I will set up sessions at the ACE center.

 Slept through an exam/test: In the unlikely event that I slept through an exam, I would beg the professor for another chance, and if they don’t allow me another chance, I would accept the low grade, as it is my fault I fell asleep.

 Missed an assignment due date:

If I miss an assignment’s due date, I will turn it in late (considering the instructor allows it) and accept the penalty on my score for tardiness.

 Feeling nervous or overwhelmed: If I feel nervous or overwhelmed, I will reach out to one of the counselors in order to get help.

 Scheduled for the wrong course/class: If I get scheduled for the incorrect course/class, I will reach out to my counselor in order to fix it.

 Cannot log into LoudCloud/GCU Library: If I can’t log into LoudCloud/GCY Library, I will reach out to technical support to find out what is wrong....
