LEADER’S BACKGROUND

Howard Schultz was born in Brooklyn, New York on 19th July 1953. Howard Schultz opens his own coffee store, but it was not run up well like how he expected. Due to his patience and hard work, he had 3 espresso bars named II Giornale in 1987. Two years later, Howard Schultz bought Starbucks because he found that the owners of Starbucks were going to sell the store because the company was having trouble. He became the CEO and Chairman of the Starbucks Coffee Company. He transformed the business into sustainable profit and growth. By 2018, Starbucks ranked fifth on Fortune’s List of the World Most Admired Companies 2018 and 2019. Howard Schultz then officially left his Starbuck chairman position to become a chairman emeritus in 2018.[ CITATION how21 \l 17417 ]

LEADERSHIP TRAITS AND SKILLS

Flexibility Howard knows that no matter what value or company goals that you try to achieve, it must show flexibility to keep pace with the changing situation. He didn’t want to lose a single customer from Starbucks’ outlet, so he adds non-fat milk to the menu because of the growing amount of health conscious. Before this, Starbucks used to sell coffees made with only whole milk. [CITATION Cop21 \l 17417 ] Passion Howard shows passion through his duties as a leader. By passion, it could bring self-motivation and without it, you cannot focus on your task. Howard also tried the best to bring passion into his workers so that they will think of Starbucks as their own and try hard to work for it.[CITATION Cop21 \l 17417 ] Bravery Howard believed that success won’t come if you always playing conscious. In 1996, United Airlines wanted to build a contract with Starbuck to serve coffee on the flight, but the airlines had a bad reputation and does not have any stakeholders. However, Howard agreed to make a contract with them because it was an opportunity to serve over twenty million people a year.

LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOUR

Relationship-oriented style Howard used the path-goal model of administration to drive people to attain organizational goals when promoting a relationship-oriented style. Howard, on the other hand, used the time to maintain the company's growth. In moderate control situations, management focuses on group relations to reduce unwanted tension among leaders, allowing the group to be more innovative when making decisions. By encouraging creativity in the production, Howard improved his relationship with the management. In low-control situations, the leadership has a hard time organizing the workers' support. Some leaders departed at this time because they did not get enough support from the group, but Howard seemed to get a lot of support from the group due to his commitment to leadership.[ CITATION stu21 \l 17417 ]

Task orientation Howards maintained efficiency in managing the company's affairs by ensuring that the staff received proper instructions and allocating some managerial roles during task orientation. He is more focused on the task at hand than on group support, and he will not accept laziness and will help enhance work performance. When there is a lack of control, the leader is expected to choose the challenges and organize the task. Howard chose the challenges by organizing a team to carry out the Starbucks Company's structural revolution, and never gave up on his mission to make Starbucks successful.[ CITATION stu21 \l 17417 ]

LEADERSHIP POWER

Position power In his management role, Howard Schultz used the leadership continuum model. The leadership continuum is a type of leadership in which the relationship between the boss and the subordinates varies depending on the situation. The boss, subordinates, and the situation of applying leadership methods are the three primary variables.[ CITATION stu21 \l 17417 ]

Referent Power The ability of a leader to inspire his employees to operate a firm is referred to referent power. This sort of power derives from subordinates' admiration for the leader. It is not official power but used as a symbol of the leader's standing as a role model. Because of his colleagues' and employees' regard for him, he exercised referent power. They appreciated and enjoyed the direction, according to their remarks during the open forums.[ CITATION stu21 \l 17417 ] CONCLUSION Howard Schultz was a great leader due to his power in managing strategy till Starbucks becomes famous. He considered engaging, supporting, and developing his followers as the most important aspects of his job. For Starbuck, this is a critical component. Howard Schultz's ambition was to take Starbucks to new heights. He accomplishes this by his business passion and aspirations as well as effective economic models. With such leadership abilities, it is no surprise that the company has remained the world's most successful coffee shop.
