PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Lowers blood sugar by moving glucose from the blood into the body's cells. Take 30 minutes to an 1 hour to take effect.
Therapeutic Use Control hyperglycemia for type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus
Complications Swelling, hypokalemia, hypoglycemia, erythema, lipodystrophy, pruritits, anaphylaxis.
Medication Administration IV and Subcutaneous
Contraindications/Precautions Allergy or hypersensitity to a type of insulin, preservatives or other additives. Use cautiously in: Stress and infection ( may temporarily increase insulin requirement) Renal/hepatic impairment (may lowers insulin requirment) Concomitant use with pioglitazone or rosiglitazone. (high risk of fluid retention)
Interactions Beta blockers and clonidine mask some of the symptoms of hyperglycemia Corticosteriods, thyroid supplements, estrogens, isoniazid,niacin, phrnothiazines, and rifampin may increase insulin requirements. Alcohol, ACE inhibitors, MAO inhibitors, octreotide, oral hypoglycemic agents, and salicylates may lower insulin requirements Concurrent use with pioglitazone or rosiglitazone may increase risk of fluid retention. Glucosamine may worsen blood glucose control.
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Control of blood glucose levels in diabetic patients without the appearnce of hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic episodes.
