CAPSIM FAQs – Game Strategy and Decisions How can I avoid an emergency loan?

Before saving your final decisions: 

Make sure your forecasts and production schedules are realistic. If your forecasts are overly exuberant, and much of the sales do not actually materialize, you might find yourself with a lot of unsold product and zero cash. Check the Forecasting section of the Team Member Guide and pay special attention to the “Worst Case / Best Case” section.

If your Production Department bought capacity or automation, did it notify the Finance Department? Unfunded plant purchases can lead to emergency loans. You can improve Return on Sales by reducing labor costs through automation increases and TQM spending. 

How can I improve ROS?

You can also reduce material costs through MTBF reductions.

How can I improve my contribution margin?

How do I decide what to do with my product, or in what direction to go?

But all those decisions involve trade-offs, including the cost of automation and creating less desirable products with reduced reliability (MTBF). You can improve your margins two ways. If your company is a differentiator, you can raise prices. The company differentiates by creating high demand with a good design, high awareness, and easy accessibility. You sacrifice some of the demand with a higher price. If your company is a cost leader, it is more inclined to reduce material and labor costs, but offer a competitive price structure. Cost leaders achieve this by lowering the MTBF and positioning the product nearer the trailing edge of a segment. They will reduce labor costs by automating their plants. Demand is driven by aggressive pricing, and margins are maintained from a lower cost structure. There are six basic strategies that can be employed in the game to help guide the decisions you make in each round. See page 24 of the Team Member Guide to get more information on each of the six strategies.

Why did I receive low or no sales?

    

The product’s price was too high or low. The product was not inside the Rough Cut circle of any segment. The MTBF was too low. The Production Schedule was set to 0. If the HR Module is active, Worker Complement was too low and the products were not produced.

How can I correct the mistakes I made in previous rounds?

Detailed information and FAQs for each of the four main decision areas are available on the Capsim site through the Help and Support Tab>FAQS. Find out where you went wrong using the Foundation FastTrack report, as well as your debrief reports, and attempt to recover using different strategies.

Can I restart my game, or have my progress reset due to mistakes?

Generally, we encourage you to try to correct your mistakes on your own through business practices. However, in the case of unintentional typographic errors, or miscomprehensions of functions, games can be reset. Check with you instructor to see if this is possible given your unique case....
