Failure to bring a lab coat or glasses. Go to the Student Enquiries counter of the first-level labs and borrow lab coat and/or glasses (you will need to leave your student card as surety).

Unsafe/unsatisfactory footwear (As stated in the Lab Manual “and shoes that enclose the entire foot” e.g. sandals and ballet-style shoes are not acceptable). Request a make-up practical at a later time*. If no make-up practical can be scheduled then you will score 0/20 for that practical. Late arrival for classes (more than 10 minutes after the scheduled start time – i.e. later than 10:10 am for a 10 am scheduled class. Excuses such as... slept in, missed transport, car broke down, had an accident on way to university (unless you have a medical certificate), etc. are not valid. Request a make-up practical at a later time*. If the cause of the problem was completely outside your control (train broke down etc.) and no make-up practical can be scheduled then contact the subject coordinator. If the problem was under your control and no make-up practical can be scheduled then you will score 0/10 for that practical. Clashes with compulsory or important sporting/cultural/family event. As soon as the clash is identified request a make-up practical at a later time*. If no make-up practical can be scheduled then you will score 0/20 for that practical. Medical condition with a doctor’s certificate. Choice of either award of average mark of your completed practicals** or complete a make-up practical at a later time (if this is able to be scheduled). Medical certificate must be handed to the laboratory staff at the Student Enquiries counter.

* The availability of a make-up practical will depend on the availability of laboratory spaces for the missed practical. There is no guarantee that a suitable make-up practical will be scheduled – this will depend on the number of sessions that the particular practical has to run and the availability of spaces.

** All six practicals must be completed. A minimum of 4 practicals may be completed on the basis that a medical certificates is handed in for both missed practicals. Students that have missed a practical class with out a medical certificate will be given 0/20 for that practical. All students, even if they have medical certificates, are required to complete at least 4 practical exercises. Failure to do so, will result in a failure of the subject. Make-up practicals can be made at the First Year Enquiries Counter located on the Ground floor of the chemistry building (just past the entrance to the laboratory).
