Description

Chapter 7 Schemata & Scripts 1. Family Schemata Instructions: Does your family have any schemata or scripts that are special to the family? What about the holidays? Birthdays? Special occasions? Provide two examples for schemata that you have/use (the examples must be different from the ones used in the book and class). For each schema explain how it meets the characteristics/principles for schemata.

Make sure your response includes the following: 1. What is the schema?

My family attends Church because at a young age we learned that good Christians go to Church and read the Bible. My second schema is that my family always decorates the house for holidays because they think the most spirited and happy people do. 2.

Indicate when you would use the schema or what situation it would be appropriate/helpful.

I would use my first schema on every Sunday and possibly on Wednesday nights; it is very helpful because when I attend Church I feel more connected to God then when I don’t. My second, I use it every holiday; however, it is not necessarily helpful as much as its just turned into I like decorating. 3.

Using the terminology, explain how your schema meets these four characteristics.

4.

What happens when someone outside of the family participates in these events and does not have the schema?

If someone from a different religion or chooses not to celebrate in decorating from holidays, it does not affect my family or I. That is their choice of religion and who to follow in their faith; it is also their decision on whether or not they want to decorate their house for holidays, some cannot afford too or even want too. 5.

If families can have their own schemata, what does this suggest about various cultures? What are the implications of this when a person from another country now lives in the United States?

I think that it is very possible that other cultures or people from other cultures have their own schemas. A schema is based on what we have grown to learn in our environment and keep in our memory. A person who has faith in a different religion or moves from a different country will have potentially grown up in a different environment, teaching them something completely different. 6.

What would be some of the default information or inferences that could be made?

People grow up in different cultures and different environments which cause them to experience different things; such as someone that is from Houston Texas compared to someone from Knoxville Tennessee. Not everyone and their families will share the same schema’s; however, they may experience ones that are similar in comparison. Like I said, I have a faith in Christianity, many others participate in religious beliefs even if they are different from my own faith. 2. Schemata and Scripts in Entertainment Media

Instructions: Provide two examples of schemata or scripts that you have seen/heard from any type of media (e.g., movies, TV and/or radio). Make sure that your response includes the following: 1. A description of the schema or script and when it would be used.

a. In social media, it is seen that if you want to be popular or famous, it is required to either be pretty, rich, or hilariously funny to draw attention. b. In movies, women tend to lean towards the bad boy characters because it may not be what they need but what they want. 2. For each schema explain some of the assumed knowledge or inferences that one would make.

a. We assume that in order to be famous you have to share one of these qualities; such as the Kardashians, I have no clue what they’re famous for but I know that they are rich and that they had money to get plastic surgery done to also be pretty. b. We can assume that the good girl will always choose the bad boy first in a movie because it has become a stereotype for theatrical women to follow. 3. Explain the purpose of the media making use of that particular schema/script.

a. I don’t know the exact purpose of course that the media has for showing off celebrities, there are probably a lot of reasons why. I think one of the reasons they promote celebrities is to make money. I would hope for the economy, but typically the movie industry. However, a lot of celebrities do give back to the communities and volunteer their time (even if it is for publicity). b. I don’t really believe that there is a true reason as to why the movie industry portrays girls to follow the bad boy, I think it is just to create a movie plot and to make money....
