Description of Procedure During the test, the mother drinks a sweet liquid (glucose) and will then have blood drawn one hour later because blood glucose peaks within an hour. No fasting is required and it is usually done between 24-28 weeks. It will show how the body is processing sugar.

Indications The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends performing one hour blood glucose test to screen fro gestational diabetes in pregnant women between 24-28 weeks of pregnancy.

Interpretation of Findings Normal fasting blood glucose level is lower than 95 mg/dL. One hour after drinking the glucose solution, normal blood glucose level is lower than 180mg/dL. Two hours after drinking the solution, normal blood glucose level is lower than 155mg/dL.

Potential Complications Some women may feel nauseated, sweaty, or lightheaded after they drink the glucose. Serious side effects from the test are very uncommon.
