Description

Discussion Assignment Unit 1 16 Re: Discussion Forum Unit 1 by Jadon Louis - Wednesday, 23 June 2021, 2:44 PM I currently reside on a small Caribbean island called Saint Lucia. Despite St. Lucia being a peaceful country, there are a few environmental concerns with the predominant concern being, deforestation; soil erosion, particularly in the northern region. Deforestation is the destruction of vast areas of forest (e.g., unsustainable forestry practices, agricultural and range land clearing, and the overexploitation of wood products for use as fuel; in the case of my country coal making) without planting new growth. Soil erosion is the removal of soil by the action of water or wind, compounded by poor agricultural practices, deforestation, overgrazing, and desertification. When researching the environmental concerns in my area I was not surprised because they have been the same for some time now. Due to the big shift from using land for agriculture to more commercial use, there has been deforestation taking place around the island. This in turn over the past few years has caused a few landslides to occur during hurricanes and tropical depressions. A few possible solutions to improve this situation can be replanting some trees back in the areas that were cleared for starters. Even though the areas being deforested are used for commercial projects/ development, trees can still be replanted on the development site to help prevent soil erosion. On most development sites the land is not fully used for the project enabling space for deep-rooted trees to be planted around the sites. Another possible solution is to build a retaining wall at the base of any slope to protect your home or property. Build a heavy, brick retaining wall along the base of the slope. Extend it for the entire length of your property for the best protection. This can prevent landslides or divert the flow away from your home. Of what I learned from the snapshot, what interested me was the fact that apart from the environmental statistics not being updated for over six years, there was little to no information for how my country manages its waste disposal as well as the water and sanitation. In order for me to make a more beneficial contribution to help my country with their environmental concerns, they first need to update their statistics on the UN Statistics site to give residents a better understanding of what we are dealing with environment-wise.
