MAFS.3.MD.1.1 :Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram With teacher instruction, students will master using the ‘mountain strategy’ to determine elapsed time by completing word problems that deal with real world situations. Reading the short story ‘What a Morning!’ to the class and asking the following questions: Have you ever had a terrible morning where you didn’t want to come to school? Have you ever been late to school? ‘Today I'm going to tell you about the crazy morning I had.

Listen carefully because you will use what I'm telling you again during the lesson.’ Procedures (Do not forget transitions)

1. Direct Instruction: The teacher will review prior knowledge using the following website: www.shodor.org/interactive/activities/ClockWi se. a. The clock on display begins at 12:00 a.m. The teacher will point out the hour hand (blue) and the minute hand (red). What a Morning! Story Let me tell you how crazy my morning has been. First of all my puppy, Cricket, woke me up at 4:00am because she had to go to the bathroom. I got out of bed, put on my slippers, grabbed her leash, and took her outside. I was so tired, and all Cricket wanted to do was play. It took her 15 minutes before she used the bathroom. Finally, I got back to sleep around 4:50am only to be woken up by my alarm clock at 5:00. I hit the snooze button twice and didn’t actually get out of bed until 5:18. At 5:25am I got in the shower. YIKES!!! There was no hot water! I rushed through my shower in only 4 minutes. That was the fastest shower I have ever taken. When I got out of the shower it took me 30 minutes to get ready. Once ready, I decided I would make breakfast. I was in the mood for cheese toast today. I took bread and sliced cheese out and put 2 pieces on a pan in the oven. I looked at the clock and noticed it was 6:10am. Right then Cricket started barking and I could tell she wanted to go out again. I put on her leash and walked her out into the back yard. As soon as we got outside she saw a cat and pulled away from me. I spent the next 12 minutes running around the neighborhood trying to catch her. I finally caught her. I brought her back to the house and immediately could smell smoke. I completely forgot about my cheese toast cooking in the oven. I opened the oven, took out the toast and black smoke filled the room. Immediately the smoke detector went off. I opened a window in the kitchen to let smoke out but the alarm continued to go off for 4 more minutes. When it finally stopped I realized there was not enough time to make more toast. I grabbed a breakfast bar and headed to the car. On the way to work I got stuck in traffic because of a wreck for 20 minutes. Now I’m going to be late for work! I was almost to work when my gas light came on. Now I’m going to have to stop to get gas. That didn’t take that long but made me even later. 8 minutes later to be exact. I finally arrived at work only 22 minutes late. I was supposed to be there at 7:15. Sometimes we have crazy mornings like this. Have you ever had a crazy morning where nothing seems to go your way? Because I know all about elapsed time, I can figure out exactly how many minutes certain things that occurred this morning took. Have you ever been so excited about going somewhere that you had a hard time sleeping? Have you ever been on a trip and asked your parents, Are we there yet? Well, once you learn this strategy for elapsed time you won't have to ask them that anymore. You will be able to figure out exactly how much time is left before that activity all by yourself.
