Expository Essay

Fear is an aspect that people have different opinions on in different situations in life. Through literature, “The Raven”, "Sleep paralysis”, and “Why Do Some Brains Enjoy Fear?” are good examples of how fear is expressed in different ways. Is fear something that people inherently enjoy or find intolerable? The interview, “why do some brains enjoy fear?” by Allegra Ringo has multiple reasons why people enjoy experiencing fear. The Interview says “that people can get the natural high from the fight-or-flight response can feel great” (Ringo 91). That is why in America people pay to get scared like for example, Haunted horror nights at Univeral Or Sixflags Horror nights. The Text States, “People differ in their chemical response to thrilling situations” (Ringo 91) this goes to show that people in some situations enjoy the feeling due to a hormone released during scary activities called Dopamine. Another reason why people like the feeling of being scared is that they feel confident in the end. Say if you watch a scary movie you sometimes get a certain feeling like you achieved something. The reason why some people can’t enjoy fear is either because they went through something traumatizing when they were a kid, for instance going to haunted attractions with their parents. Like the interview says “ I always recommend parents thoroughly check out the content and rating of haunted attractions before bringing a child”

(Ringo 92) This gives more information of how some people learn to hate the feeling of being scared. Furthermore, “Sleep Paralysis: A Waking Nightmare” By Lexi Tucker Shows us how people go through Horrible Nightmares and some fear going to bed. The article states " I wouldn’t care if he slapped me hard as the terror of being in that paralyzed state, totally helpless, is overwhelming. Knowing that it will end eventually is of no comfort. Every second is hell.” (Tucker 1) This proves that people who experience these types of things fear going to bed and resting. From the previous paragraph, those people enjoy the feeling, but this fear is different and dangerous. People can enjoy fear when they know they are in a safe environment, But people who experience sleep paralysis feel very uncomfortable, scared, and unsafe. For example, “It is a feeling of panic, entrapment, and desperation so horrifying that I have difficulty describing it’s magnitude.” (Tucker 1). Sleep paralysis is a condition that people can not control but not many get. “The Raven” By Edgar Allan Poe Is an example of how fear is expressed in literature. For example, “ Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, over a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore-” (Poe 104). That is an example of how the “ fear “ feeling in literature is more of an unsettling or uncomfortable feeling. When it comes to this it’s not like the feeling that you can’t fall asleep or you feel very unsafe. Like I have said before people can enjoy fear more when they know they are in a safe environment, so most people don’t get scared when they read this story. They like the creepy gothic vibe with it. This story is famous because

they like the way it rhythms and how you can imagine or picture how the story would go.

From writing about “ Why Do Brains Enjoy Fear?”, “Sleep Paralysis” and “ The Raven” It seems like it really depends on the person if they went through something traumatizing and can not enjoy the feeling or even if they did but still like the feeling of being “scared”....
