Expository Essay: Outline Directions: 1. Please review your Topic 3 readings and the “Planning and Getting Started” section of “The Writing Process” media piece. 2. Fill in the outline and references sections below. Use a minimum of three peer reviewed resources to support your subtopics (one resource per supporting paragraph). Make sure to use complete sentences when completing the outline.

Expository Essay Topic: 3. Three ways bullying can negatively impact children Essay Title: The effects of bullying on children’s mental health I. Introduction: (Begin with a hook sentence to capture your audience’s attention, then provide a brief background of the topic and end with your thesis statement.) a. Hook: Bullying is a serious issue that many people can connect with because everyone has either gone through it, witnessed it happen to others, or have even bullied others themselves. b. Additional background information: Countless of research shows that bullying not only affects the victim but also the people around them and the bully as well. Children experience numerous effects from bullying victimization that can last a lifetime, but more specifically the effects on their mental health is a cause of concern. c. Mapped Thesis statement (review Topic 3 DQ1 for feedback from instructor): Bullying can negatively impact a child’s mental health by resulting in low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety.

Support Supporting Point #1 (subtopic 1): _______Low self-esteem______

a. Topic sentence for this first sub-topic: Self-esteem is how we see and value ourselves and bullying victimization can cause a child’s self-esteem to drop. b. c. Two to three paraphrased supporting details from your research with in-text citations  Supporting paraphrase 1: When a child is constantly bullied, they will tend to start believing it is true, especially when it is about aspects of themselves, they simply can’t change such as, skin color, looks, height etc. Children will see their differences as a weakness and in turn damaging how they see themselves. (Darian et al., 2020) 

Supporting paraphrase 2: Children have this desire to be accepted by their peers and it plays a big role in their happiness and self-concept. Bullying can cause a child to see themselves as worthless because their victimization is seen as a rejection from their peers and from society. (Tural Hesapçıoğlu et al., 2018)

Supporting Point #2 (subtopic 2): ____Depression___ a. Topic sentence for this second sub-topic: Although bullying can leave children with physical effects like cuts and bruises it also causes a significant long term mental effect such as depression. b. Two to three paraphrased supporting details from your research with in-text citations  Supporting paraphrase 1: Bullying victimization is often associated with violence, confrontation, and anger. traumatic events related to peer relationships, such as being bullied, may induce trauma serious enough to lead to depression, particularly during adolescent growth, when peer relationships are of utmost importance. (Kaltiala-Heino, & Fröjd. 2011) 

Supporting paraphrase 2: According to the study's results, there is a slight but positive connection between bullying and adolescent depression, with high levels of bullying being linked to increased levels of depression. (Uba et al., 2010)

Supporting Point #3 (subtopic 3): _____Anxiety_____

a. Topic sentence for this third sub-topic: Children are always advised to confront their fears, but in the case of bullying, this contradicts another common piece of advice: ignore the bully. Furthermore, doing nothing make children feel powerless, which can lead to anxiety.

b. Two to three paraphrased supporting details from your research with in-text citations  Supporting paraphrase 1: Bullying victims, according to research, have more serious anxiety effects than others. Bullying has also been related to social anxiety, which can last well into adulthood and raise the risk of developing personality disorders. (Tzani-Pepelasi, 2018) 

Supporting paraphrase 2: An anxiety disorders clinic’s patient were asked if they had ever been harassed or seriously mocked. This question was answered affirmatively by 85% of participants with social anxiety disorder. Moreover, respondents with social anxiety disorder were considerably more likely than those who have panic disorder to report being harassed or heavily harassed. (Roth et al., 2002)

Conclusion: (Paraphrase your thesis statement, summarize main points, and make final remarks.) a. Paraphrase thesis statement: Bullying has been shown to have a negative effect on a child's mental health by causing low selfesteem, depression, and anxiety.

b. Summarize main points: Bullying victimization can cause a child's self-worth to decrease, they will constantly worry about everything around them and can become overwhelmingly miserable. Children who experience bullying will develop difficulty not seeing differences as a weakness and it will continuously damage how they perceive themselves. Bullying victimization that goes untreated raises the risk of developing personality and mental/emotional disorders in adulthood.
