Expository Essay Topic: How has social media affected relationships? Essay Title: The Good And Bad of Social Media I. Introduction: (Begin with a hook sentence to capture your audience’s attention, then provide a brief background of the topic and end with your thesis statement.) a. Hook: Social Media, which many believe is a blessing and curse has been proven to be one of the more efficient and futuristic ways to do business, interact with those you know and don’t know, even down to our most intimate relationships. b. Additional background information: Studies have shown that in 2005 about 3% of the nation had met and dated on social media and in 2014 it had risen to 6%.

c. Mapped Thesis statement (review Topic 3DQ1 for feedback from instructor): Social media has affected relationships by impacting emotional development, enhancing shorter attention spans and the success of dating and marriages.

Support Supporting Point #1 (subtopic 1): Emotional Development a. Topic sentence for this first sub-topic: Social Media has been a pro and con for the Emotional Development, whether or not

whether it relates to a like or dislike or just the impact on the emotional development. b. Two to three paraphrased supporting details from your research with in-text citations  Supporting paraphrase 1: Studies have shown that emotionally we are thrown off by messages, it affects our ability to think to think straight and become dependent on momentary impulses. Supporting paraphrase 2: Emotional development was greatly impacted by social media that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that families lessen the amount of time children under 8 years of age spend on it. (Globokar, 2018)

Explain why this research is important to your audience (avoid 1st & 2nd person): This information is important because many are not aware of the affect that social media has warranted our children and how quickly they could lose their innocence by becoming so engulfed in social media at an early age.

Supporting Point #2 (subtopic 2): Attention Spans a. Topic sentence for this second sub-topic: Social Media has given us the ability to do many things at once, but the efficiency of it

all has not always been up to the best standards. b. Two to three paraphrased supporting details from your research with in-text citations  Supporting paraphrase 1: Students who send text messages throughout lectures are getting worse results. Our brains are

not capable of doing intensively things at once. (Globokar, 2018)



Supporting paraphrase 2: Using various facilities provided through technology, intelligence and wisdom are needed without it social media can be a disaster. ( Julia, Kurnia, Sudin, 2018)

c. Explain why this research is important to your audience (avoid 1st & 2nd person): The research is important because it will enhance our awareness of how much of a distraction social media can be when doing necessary things in life.

Supporting Point #3 (subtopic 3): Marriage and Dating Relationships a. Topic sentence for this third sub-topic: While social media has been the reason for success in love it has also been the downfall

of many marriages and dating relationships.

Two to three paraphrased supporting details from your research with in-text citations  Supporting paraphrase 1: Social Media is a major influence in establishing what a perfect relationship should be. Relationship and Marital values have become damaged or flawed because of what social media portrays as standard. (Gonzalez, 2015)
