Summary

This is my speech on the mental health in college students...

Description

Introduction I. II. III. IV.

V.

Attention-Getter: What do you know about mental health? Do you just know the basics? Or do you know more? Credibility: Throughout my high school and college studies I have learned a lot about mental health and the struggles that come with it. Relevance: As college students, there are many of us that deal with mental health. More specifically anxiety and depression. Thesis: Hailey Hardcastle gave a speech about taking mental health days (Hardcastle, 2020). Today, I want to talk about how real mental health is, and how it can affect us as college students. Preview: I will start with a brief overview of Hailey Hardcastle’s speech, then I will talk about the effects mental health has on college students, and finally I will speak about how we can find ways to strengthen our mental health

Body VI.

Background of “great speech” a. Provide context for the “great speech”. (Who? Where? When?): Hailey Hardcastle gave this speech in May of 2020 at a Ted conference. b. Introduce the main characters/actors, if applicable. (Whom was affected by the topic? From where did the topic come?): Her talk is geared toward those who are affected by mental health and those who have the ability to help student have mental health days. c. Describe the event/conflict. (What happened?): When Hailey was in school, her mom allowed her to take days off school when she was struggling with her mental health. This allowed her time to recharge and succeed in her education. When she was in high school there was a committee of students that discussed mental health in teenagers. When the committee met she and the other students realized that almost everyone in that room had dealt with some sort of mental health struggle. d. Describe the ending/resolution (How did the event/conflict end?): Once they realized this, they went to work on making it so that students would be able to take the day off school when they were struggling with mental health. With a lot of hard work and help, they students were able to get a bill passed in the state of Oregon that allowed for students to take days off for mental health reason.

Transition statement: Full-sentence transition: This sounds like a marvelous idea, but how many college students are affected by mental health such as anxiety and depression. VII.

Adapt to todays cultural, political, and/or social contexts.: According to Chadron State College, “More than 11 percent of college students have been diagnosed or treated for anxiety in the past year and more than 10 percent reported being diagnosed or treated for depression” (Chadron State College). Chadron State goes on by saying, “More than 80 percent of college students felt overwhelmed by all they had to do in the past year and 45 percent have felt things were hopeless” (Chadron State College). This means that there are many college students who are struggling, but the startling part is how few let anyone know they are struggling. Most students are not reaching out to those who could help them. This can end up causing them more stress than they need to be worrying.

Transition statement: Full-sentence transition: Yet, how do college students find ways to manage their anxiety and depression? VIII.

Adapt to today’s cultural, political, and/or social contexts.: There are many things that we as college students can do to battle mental health. However, some are better than others. For any student’s mental health self-care is incredibly important. According to Maryville University, “[Y]ou should strive to get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise, and avoid overloading your schedule with classes, work, and too many extracurricular activities” (Maryville University, 2020). However, even if we strive to use self-care, there are going to be times when it feels like it does not work. When this happens, we should reach out and talk to someone and see if they have any suggestions.

Transition statement: Full-sentence transition: With all this said and done, it is up to each student to decide what they want to do regarding their mental health. Conclusion IX.

X.

Final commentary on topic: a. Effects of the speech on you, the audience, the future, etc.: Hailey Hardcastle’s speech made me realize how nice having mental health days would be, and that there are many ways I can fight my own mental health struggles. b. Long-term and/or unforeseen effects: Since hearing this speech, I have decided that I want to help myself and others find different ways to battle the struggles that come from mental health. Summary: Hailey Hardcastle told us how she and other students help the students in Oregon get to where they can have mental health days. There are so many college students who struggle with mental, but very few reach out to get the help they need. Even though very few students reach out for help, there are many things they can do that can still help their mental health. a. Memorable closing: So, what are you going to do to help manage your mental health?
