Halay in its intercultural and womenrights context in Turkish diasporas This research seeks to explore the political and ethnic representation among dancing and performance of Turkish minorities in Germany in relation to the feministic perspective. I want to find out more about the Turkish national dance called “halay” and its importance for the Turkish diaspora in Germany. To make the scientific and social importance of the Anthropology of Dance clear I would consider Anthony Shay´s concept of dancing. He states that dancing – especially in cultural diasporas – implies ethnic, cultural and political messages and also addresses cultural structures of minorities in foreign nations. Since the topic about halay in Turkish groups has its special importance in multicultural and social sciences, there doesn’t exist any specific literature which provides us information about the cultural Turkish diaspora in Germany. So the distinction of halay in Germany and Turkey does not currently exist and makes us unable to differ between the national and diaspora version of halay. We have to consider that there may be cultural and anthropological differences because of the cultural context of dancing and performance- especially when we want to deal with the women´s role in performance. Halay in his performance became a national symbol since the Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923. In this context halay had its importance in relation to women rights and his performance. Before the Republic of Turkey existed the Islamic culture had a massive impact on music: the Islamic religion was antagonistic to dance, and especially introduced the taboo forbidding women to dance together with men. This kind of expression is still present in conservative groups in Turkey and has also a massive impact in its political importance. I would state, that the conservative or Islamic form of halay still implies a radical manhood because the performance trims to show men as the dominating gender. Nevertheless since the agenda of Ataturk seeks to base on western values, women rights and democracy were integrated in the expression of halay. This concept is stressed by the thesis of the musicethnologist Martin Stokes. He states that Turkish music was impacted of Western civilization and achieved a musical synthesis

(Shay 2002: 194). This research should show us how the modernization of Turkish dancing with women as an equal actor to men exists in Turkish diasporas in Frankfurt am Main. This research has to consider Dance as a Structured Movement System especially in women´s cases to find out more about the implications of the sociopolitical context. I will focus on the Western concept of the word “dance” since halay is now officially adapted as a dance, which is present in western civilizations and the research just wants to find out, how strong the women rights in Turkish minorities evolved and spread in Frankfurt. To do this I also have to differ the Turkish cultures in Germany since there are two major political communities who are in contrast to each other. At first we have the Islamic conservatives who don’t prior women as central elements in dancing and the second one is the modern variation which want to adapt to western values but still proudly recognize their Turkish roots in Germany. I seek to find out the cultural values adapted in halay and its intercultural differences within the Turkish group and its distinction to the Turkish majority in the Republic of Turkey. To do this I will examine the performance, personal structure and the interaction between women and men of popular halay in Turkish weddings and festivals by certain contacts in Frankfurt am Main and Kreis Offenbach from December 2017 to February 2018.
