Description

April 4, 2018 Jeffrey Bezos Amazon Headquarters 410 Terry Ave. North Seattle, WA Dear Jeff Bezos, I am writing to persuade you to consider Baltimore, Maryland as the destination for a new Amazon facility. Baltimore has a city population of roughly 620,000 and county population of nearly 800,000. If a facility were to open here, it would garner attention from many prospective customers as well as those who are interested in obtaining a working position. Current employees who might transfer to work in this area would benefit from all the great things that Baltimore offers. My city has a great historical significance, plenty of entertainment, excellent transportation services and diverse educational opportunities –all while being right in the middle of Delmarva. My city is rich with history. Baltimore was founded in 1729 and participated in the War of 1812 and the Civil War. During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the StarSpangled Banner as the British bombed Fort McHenry at the Battle of Baltimore. Almost a century later, Baltimore stood strong through the Great Baltimore fire of 1904. Members of the community kept the same perseverance that they have had since Baltimore was founded to rebuild the city blocks that were leveled by the fire. There are neighborhoods in Baltimore that people are drawn to for the sake of history, art, nightlife, and food attractions. Canton is an area that is filled with local pubs where you can find great food, such as Mama's On the Half Shell, which sells amazing seafood in a comfortable setting. This area also hosts plenty of summer concerts and wine festivals. Federal Hill is another neighborhood known for their food and nightlife. Fell’s Point is across from Federal Hill on the other side of the Patapsco River and is specifically known for its waterfront view where you can walk down cobblestone streets and enjoy the boats passing by. Mount Vernon houses much of Baltimore’s history and culture, as it is the home of the Washington Monument, the George Peabody Library, and the Walter’s Art Museum. Transportation in Baltimore is rather extensive. MARC trains provide long distance travel so that you may come and go to major areas around Baltimore easily. Some of the stops include Harford County, Maryland; Baltimore City; Washington D.C.; Brunswick, Maryland; Frederick, Maryland and Martinsburg, West Virginia. There is also a bus system called City Link, where the routes start from the outer areas of the county and work their way in towards the inner city. This allows hundreds of thousands of individuals to take public transportation to work or other destinations. In the inner city, there is a metro that connects with bus lines. Unregulated transportation such as MegaBus and Greyhound will take you from Baltimore to any city within their limits. Lyft and Uber are also very popular here. There are plenty of popular vacation spots within short traveling distance. Baltimore is not far from Washington D.C., Ocean City, or Rehoboth. A few hours in the car would allow you to go any of these places, however, Baltimore’s extensive methods of cheap transportation make a car unnecessary to enjoy what is around.

Educational opportunities are always an important factor, as it would allow your employees to go back to school and gain additional knowledge so that they may be promoted internally. In Baltimore County and City alone, there are numerous Public universities such as Towson University, Morgan State University, Coppin State University, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, and the University of Baltimore. For those who do not wish to have a four-year degree, Community College of Baltimore County and Baltimore City Community College are great choices. There are also a handful of private universities in this area. After reading about the great things that Baltimore has to offer your company and employees, I truly hope you consider my city as a potential location for your next new facility. Sincerely, Carrigan Ambrose...
