2-1 Journal

Jean is an 87yr old woman who was hospitalized after having a stroke which has left her paralyzed on the left side of her body. Jean currently lives alone. Due to Jean’s immobility, she needs assistance with eating, transferring to and from her wheelchair, and routine daily living tasks. Jean is struggling financially; she is currently receiving a pension and social security. Jean’s insurance is not adequate enough to cover her recent escalating medical bills. In reviewing Jean’s case, there are two options that will help improve the quality of her daily life. Home health care and in-home or facility rehabilitation. Having home care will allow Jean the independence that she needs versus a nursing home which has more restrictions. A home healthcare aide will provide and assist Jean with personal care (bathing, brushing hair, and teeth), housework, laundering23 services, administering medication, and other daily activities. Home healthcare will also provide companionship to Jean due to her living alone, having PTSD, and effects from the trauma of being raped by a neighbor. Having a home healthcare aide will offer Jean a sense of security having someone in the house with her. Rehabilitation services can be done in-home with limited exercises or a rehab facility with more supervision and resources that will enable Jean better mobility of her left side. Rehabilitation will allow Jean to exercise her muscles, become more mobile in participating in light daily activities and personal care. There are three types of rehabilitation services. These services include physical therapies, speech, and occupational therapy. Because of Jean’s stroke, she will more benefit from physical therapy and occupational therapy. Occupational therapy focuses on improving a person’s ability to perform daily activities while physical therapy improves a person’s ability to perform the movement of their body. Occupational therapy will help Jean regain her independence by performing her own light
