Description

I’m going to present you the notion idea of progress. For that, i’m going to define this notion. The progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change which can be technical, scientific with medical advances or social with women’s rights for example. Thereby the progress contributes to making the world a better place. We decided in class to stud this notion through the topic of the sustainable development which means that the planet can continu to do what it’s designed to do : provide fresh air, clean water and produce food. For that, the question i have choosen to discuss is : « how will we adapt ? » Firstly, we will stud in a first part the impact of our lifestyle on the planet. Then, we will show the alternative that propose by architecture and finally we will see the limits.

Firs of all, we studed a first report which shows that we don’t respect the rules of sustainable development, so, we are currently unsustainable. We understood that the services provide by the planet decline because the way we are living. Moreover, the demands increase because the population increase. Indeed, the documentary « the world in 2050 : overpulation » shows that we will be 10 billion on Earth to this date. This overpopulation will creat many problems like housing, food, water, fresh air and poverty problems. The alternative to these problems can be the architecture but we are faced with a dilemma : build cities from the ground up or restore existing cities. Foremost, we stud in class the Venus project which established different way to creat new cities sustainable. Masdar, the green city inspired by this project is in construction near Abou Dabi. This city in balance with nature will be carbon free, waste free, gas free and powered by the sun. On a other hand, we see a report about BedZed, a totaly restore district in the south of London created in 2002. Bedzed, thanks to recycling beans, natural lightning and clean transport for example reduce its ecological footprint by half. Indeed, compares to conventional dwenlings, the energy consumption for heating is reduce by 88 pourcent and the use of water by two. Finaly, these two ideas are not perfect. Indeed, the construction cost are enormus and the housing expensive. In Bedzed the consumption is reduced but still existing. Moreover, the solar pannels used are not recyclable and Masdar will be a free zone tax, so we can wonder if this city isn’t just an opportunity for the United Arab Emirates to welcome new wealthy foreigners on its soil. In my point of view, we need to stay focus on the restoration of our cities because it’s a more credible and realizable solution.

To conclud, it’s a real race against the time and we must act or the consequences will be enormous for humanity. This may seem difficult to achieve but it’s what we need to organize quickly otherwise our future could be compromised....
