The four cardinal signs of inflammation are pain, redness, heat, and swelling. Inflammation may also have loss of function associated with it. When a tissue is injured, mast cells that are present release histamine, a vasodilator, which increases blood flow, which causes the damaged area to become red and heated. With the increase of blood flow and the signals release, white blood cells travel through the bloodstream to the inflammation site. White blood cells are able to move through the lining of the blood vessels to the interstitial tissue spaces due to the influence of histamine. This increase of fluid in the interstitial tissue causes swelling seen with tissue damage. This then causes squeezing of pain receptors. The white blood cells consume bacteria at the site of injury. Clotting occurs to reduce blood loss from the damage, which leads to a scab forming. Then fibroblasts begin to build new tissue. The clot pulls in the edges of the wound as the tissue is replaced and repaired. If someone who takes NSAIDs on a regular basis gets injured, the antiinflammatory drug will cause the wound not to clot, which could cause major blood loss....
