Individual Assignment Description and Marking Rubric for 2018 regarding interviews and report on two entrepreneurs ...
University of Western Australia MGMT3342 Entrepreneurship 2018 Summer
Entrepreneurial Interview Assignment Each student will interview an entrepreneur of his/her choice. The goal is to provide you with insights about entrepreneurship that cannot be obtained from classroom experience alone. Choose entrepreneurs in an industry that is personally interesting to you. While you may find it difficult to cold-call an entrepreneur, you will find that most entrepreneurs will be honored to be asked about their experiences and will be willing to meet with you, either in person or through e.g. a skype call. Entrepreneurs’ schedules are often tight, and your biggest challenge will be to find free time to meet them. The interviews have to be finalized by Friday January the latest.
Written Assignment Write a paper of "between 2000 and 2500 words” that discusses the three following elements; • • • • •
Compare the value propositions of the two entrepreneurs, what are the main emphases, why do the emphases differ/have similarities? Describe briefly the customer segmentation of the business, how broad/narrow is segmentation, how can differences be explained? Comment on the continuity of both value proposition and customer segmentation over time, are there differences/similarity in continuity, how can these be explained? Comment on issues related to scalability of the venture. Are there differences between the two businesses, how can they be explained? Discuss how the findings of the interview apply (or are meaningful) to your business idea. (At least 1/3 of your assignment should focus on this last point!)
This exercise has two objectives. The first objective is to thoroughly understand the entrepreneurs and how he or she does business and understand well how the business works. The second objective is you and your potential to think like an entrepreneur. It is critical that you do not just deal with superficial questions and answers. The key is to probe, to ask why and how, to delve beneath the surface. What insights can you offer about the person’s career and your own entrepreneurial capabilities?
Tips for this assignment o The student should prepare questions in advance and are ready to ask follow-up questions depending on what the entrepreneurs answers. o The student should develop an efficient means for taking notes or capturing the key points made by the entrepreneur. Ask permission to record the interview on you so that you can either transcribe it or check that any notes you have taken have been interpreted well. o Don’t just dwell on the positive. Try to cut through the bias or propaganda.
