TED TALKS 2. KEEP YOUR GOALS TO YOURSELF Everyone, please think of your biggest personal goal. For real - you can take a second. You've got to feel this to learn it.! Take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal, okay? Imagine deciding right now that you're going to do it. Imagine telling someone that you meet today what you're going to do. Imagine their congratulations, and their high image of you. Doesn't it feel good to say it out loud? Don't you feel one step closer already, like it's already becoming part of your identity? Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling now will make you less likely to do it. The repeated psychology tests have proven that telling someone your goal makes it less likely to happen. Any time you have a goal, there are some steps that need to be done, some work that needs to be done in order to achieve it. Ideally you would not be satisfied until you'd actually done the work. But when you tell someone your goal and they acknowledge it, psychologists have found that it's called a "social reality.” The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it's already done. And then because you've felt that satisfaction, you're less motivated to do the actual hard work necessary. So this goes against conventional wisdom that we should tell our friends our goals, right? So they hold us to it. So, let's look at the proof. " 1926: Kurt Lewin, founder of social psychology, called this “substitution”" 1933: Wera Mahler found when it was acknowledged by others, it felt real in the mind.! 1982: Peter Gollwitzer wrote a whole book about this, and in 2009, he did some new tests that were published.! It goes like this: 163 people across four separate tests. Everyone wrote down their personal goal. Then half of them announced their commitment to this goal to the room, and half didn’t. Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work! that would directly lead them towards their goal, but they were told that they could stop at any time. Now, those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average, and when asked afterward, said that they felt that they had a long way to go still to achieve their goal. But those who had announced it quit after only 33 minutes, on average,! and when asked afterward, said that they felt much closer to achieving their goal. So if this is true, what can we do?! Well, you could resist the temptation to announce your goal. You can delay the gratification that the social acknowledgment brings, and you can understand that your mind mistakes the talking for the doing.! But if you do need to talk about something, you can state it in a way that gives you no satisfaction, such as, "I really want to run this marathon, so I need to train five times a week and kick my ass if I don't, okay?” So audience, next time you're tempted to tell someone your goal, what will you say? (Silence) Exactly! Well done.! WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TALK? I chose this talk because I love having goals, they make life challenging and I like a good challenge. I like the feeling of reaching a milestone because it makes me proud of myself and motivates me to find new goals to achieve a passions to fulfill. ! DO YOU AGREE WITH THE SPEAKER? IT IS APPLICABLE IN REAL LIFE? I do agree with the speaker: this talk is based on psychological facts so I consider it pretty accurate. " Sharing your goals could possibly stop you from achieving them, because your mind is tricked into thinking that you’ve already made it. But since you feel a sense of satisfaction by saying your goals out loud, you’ll be less motivated to do the actual hard work necessary. In my opinion, you can’t achieve your goals if you don’t work on them: you need to hustle and keep hustling in order to make things happen. Goals cannot be achieved without constancy, moreover, you can’t demand to be successful if you don’t work and put effort in something that will make you successful. ! IF YOU WERE TO CHANGE SOMETHING IN THE TALK, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE AND WHY? I wouldn’t change anything in the talk: the speaker based his speech on psychological facts so I consider this talk pretty accurate. Hearing this made me realise that goals can’t be achieved just by saying them out loud, because you have to put yourself in everything you do in order to make it happen. You also have to constantly work on them. " If I could add something to this talk I would point out the difference between goals and dreams: dreams and goals are confused with one another quite often. Many think that goals are like dreams in that they’re what you want to accomplish “someday.” This is why so many people never accomplish their dreams — they forget the part of taking action! Without goals, your dreams may just stay thoughts, without any chance of becoming a reality. " Goals are the path you take to make your dreams a reality.!

4. SUCCES AND FAILURE Why do so many people reach success and then fail?! One of the big reasons is, we think success is a one-way street. So we do everything that leads up to success, but then we get there we figure we've made it, we sit back in our comfort zone, and we actually stop doing everything that made us successful. And it doesn't take long to go downhill. And I can tell you this happens, because it happened to me. Reaching success, I worked hard, I pushed myself. But then I stopped, because I figured, "Oh, you know, I made it. I can just sit back and relax.” Reaching success, I always tried to improve and do good work. But then I stopped because I figured, "Hey, I'm good enough. I don't need to improve any more.” Reaching success, I was pretty good at coming up with good ideas. Because I did all these simple things that led to ideas. But then I stopped, because I figured I was this hot-shot guy and I shouldn't have to work at ideas, they should just come like magic. And the only thing that came was creative block. I couldn't come up with any ideas. Reaching success, I always focused on clients and projects, and ignored the money. Then all this money started pouring in. And I got distracted by it. And suddenly I was on the phone to my stockbroker and my real estate agent, when I should have been talking to my clients. And reaching success, I always did what I loved. But then I got into stuff that I didn't love, like management. I am the world's worst manager, but I figured I should be doing it, because I was, after all, the president of the company. Well, soon a black cloud formed over my head and here I was, outwardly very successful, but inwardly very depressed. But I'm a guy; I knew how to fix it. I bought a fast car. It didn't help. I was faster but just as depressed. So I went to my doctor. I said, “Doc, I can buy anything I want. But I'm not happy. I'm depressed. It's true what they say, and I didn't believe it until it happened to me. But money can't buy happiness.” He said, "No. But it can buy Prozac.” And he put me on antidepressants. And yeah, the black cloud faded a little bit, but so did all the work, because I was just floating along. I couldn't care less if clients ever called. And clients didn't call. Because they could see I was no longer serving them, I was only serving myself. So they took their money and their projects to others who would serve them better. Well, it didn't take long for business to drop like a rock. My partner and I, Thom, we had to let all our employees go. It was down to just the two of us, and we were about to go under. And that was great. Because with no employees, there was nobody for me to manage. So I went back to doing the projects I loved. I had fun again, I worked harder and, to cut a long story short, did all the things that took me back up to success. But it wasn't a quick trip. It took seven years. But in the end, business grew bigger than ever. And when I went back to following these eight principles, the black cloud over my head disappeared altogether. And I woke up one day and I said, "I don't need Prozac anymore."! And I threw it away and haven't needed it since. I learned that success isn't a one-way street. It doesn't look like this; it really looks more like this. It's a continuous journey. And if we want to avoid “success-to-failure-syndrome," we just keep following these eight principles, because that is not only how we achieve success, it's how we sustain it. " So here is to your continued success.! WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TALK? I chose this talk because I find inspiration in seeing other people being successful. " Hearing these kind of stories reminds me that success doesn’t come the easy way and that I have to put myself in everything I do in order to make it work. It motivates me but at the same time reminds me that it’s ok to “fail”. " You can always learn from your mistakes, you just need to work smarter and not necessarily harder. You really fail if you give up and quit, not if you make a mistake. ! DO YOU AGREE WITH THE SPEAKER? IT IS APPLICABLE IN REAL LIFE? I do agree with the speaker. I think that you need to hustle and keep hustling in order to be successful. " I believe in the phrase “success is a continuos journey” because goals cannot be achieved without constancy, moreover, you can’t demand to be successful if you don’t work and put effort in something that will make you successful. Therefore the thesis of the speaker it is accurate and applicable in all fields of life such as work, school and even relationships. ! IF YOU WERE TO CHANGE SOMETHING IN THE TALK, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE AND WHY? I wouldn’t change anything in the talk: the speaker is telling how he became successful through ups and downs and I find it inspiring. Hearing his story made me realise that success doesn’t come the easy way and that I have to put myself in everything I do in order to make it work. Therefore, I do agree with the speaker: I think that you need to hustle and keep hustling in order to be successful. When he says that “success is a continuos journey” he couldn’t be more right, because goals cannot be achieved without constancy, moreover, you can’t demand to be successful if you don’t work and put effort in something that will make you successful. This talk motivates me but at the same time reminds me that it’s ok to “fail”. You can always learn from your mistakes, you just need to work smarter and not necessarily harder. You really fail if you give up and quit, not if you make a mistake. !

TED 2 DO YOU KEEP YOU GOALS TO YOURSELF? IF NOT, WOULD YOU STOP SHARING THEM AROUND?" My parents always taught me not to share my goals with anyone and I live by that. I don’t share my goals, I keep them to myself because people could possibly try to get in your way by encouraging you not to pursue your goals and not supporting you. I don’t want to deal with people’s negativity. Moreover, now that I know that sharing my goals could possibly stop me from achieving them I will keep on keeping them a secret. ! CAN YOU/WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE ONE OF YOU GOALS? I usually don’t share my goals with people because my parents always taught me not to share them with anyone and I live by that. People could possibly try to get in your way by encouraging you not to pursue your goals and not supporting you. I don’t want to deal with people’s negativity. Moreover, now that I know that sharing my goals could possibly stop me from achieving them I will keep on keeping them a secret. ! TED 4 WHAT IS SUCCESS/FAILURE TO YOU? ! I think success/failure is super subjective, the way people view success/failure is different depending on who you are, how you were brought up, but for me: ! • success is being proud of yourself, of the things you’ve achieved. It is wanting to redo the things that made you successful, despite all the obstacles faced. ! • failure is based on expectation that I have on myself and maybe goals I’ve set for myself. If I fall short, that’s when I see myself as failing: it’s when I really wanna do something, I think I’m gonna achieve it and I don’t quite make it. " It is so relative. I suppose the dictionary definition of failure would be failing to achieve a goal, but to me would be a goal that I have set. ! " DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF SUCCESSFUL? I consider myself successful: I work hard on everything I do, especially on the things I’m really passionate about because they often match my goals. I try my best to make myself proud of the milestones that I reach, even though I sometimes fail and I have to try again. Overall, let’s just say that I’m not a “wooden spoon type of person”: the wooden spoon is the thing that you are given if you come in last place in a race. It’s it not necessary a bad thing because you can always repurpose the wooden spoon. You can do the same thing with failure, you can make failure work to your advantage. I always try to do this. So yes, I consider myself successful because I don’t stop in front of failure. ! " HOW DO YOU REACT TO FAILURE? ! I see failure as an opportunity to improve myself and the things I’m working on: I always try to learn from them. " When I was younger I didn’t react well to failure, I use to put myself down and give up at the first obstacle or at the first mistake I made. Every minor inconvenience was the right opportunity to quit whatever I was working on. " Now, I’ve changed my point of view on failure because I’ve worked on myself, on my mindset. I think it’s ok to “fail”. " I try to understand because I failed and I learn from my mistakes. I restart what I’m working on by working smarter and not necessarily harder. I believe that you really fail if you give up and quit, not if you make a mistake. ! HOW MUCH DO YOU LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES?! I always try to learn the most from my mistakes: I see failure as an opportunity to improve myself and the things I’m working on. When I was younger I didn’t react well to failure, I use to put myself down and give up at the first obstacle or at the first mistake I made. !...
