I’m going to present you the notion Seats and form of power. For that, I’m going to define this notion. Firstly, the power is the ability to influence or to force somebody else to do something. Even if the power can help to creat social cohesion, it can also lead to conflicts, tensions and to the creation of counter-powers which can limit its excesses. Moreover, it exists various types of power, indeed, the power can be economic, political or military for example. In class we studied, the relationship of men towards power. For that, we used two documents and the question i have choosen to discuss is : « what’s power ? ». To answer to this question we will show in a first time that the power is a notion complicated, then we will study the family power which can be oppresive, finaly we will see that justice can be used as conterpower.

We studied in class a passage from the saga entiteld « Game of thrones ». The document is a conversation between Varys and Tyron Lanister about the true nature of power. To present his idea of power, Varis uses the following riddle : a king, a priest, and a rich man are in a room with a sellswords, each man asks the sellsword to kill the two others. So who lives and who dies ? By this riddle, Varis puts forwards the fact that the power resides where men believe it resides whereas Tyron thinks that the sellsword is the one who have the power because he has the power of life and death. On a other hand, the document two is a extract from a navel entiteld « my sister’s keeper » writen by Jodi Picoult, it raises ethical questions. Indeed, the navel deals with Anna who whas brought to the world to save her sister Katie who suffers from leukemia. Her parents don’t listen her, they don’t give her attention except when they need blood. They put a big pressure on her, a power that we can qualify as parental authority or family power. Finaly, Anna when she is 15 refuses to give a kidney to her sister because she is fed up with being weak all the time. She decided to sue her parents for the rights of her own body. For that, she contacts a lawyer, mister Alexender, to help her. Thus, thanks to justice used as conter-power, she has the possibilities to resist to the power of her family. Therefore, she has the power of life and death on her sister which join the idea of Tyrion about the way to get power. However, she gets this power despite herself while for Varis, a person who wants power must fill conditions : be trusted enough to make decisions, be legitimate and charismatic.

To conclud, we have seen that it exists different way to get power. Indeed, for some persons the power resides in people who have the power of life and death on others. On an other hand, for Varis and others people it’s the others who give you power because they believe in you. Nevertheless, the case of Anna shows that the power resides before everything else in the knowledge....
