HUMAN BEHAVIOR & SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT Module 5 Discussion Board 1 Review Case Study 4.1 "Terri's Terrible Temper" in the Hutchison text (2019, p.116). Imagine yourself as a social worker meeting with Terri and her parents. Pick one of the eight parenting styles on p. 144 and explain how you would deal with Terri's temper from this parenting perspective. How might different parenting styles help (or hinder) Terri's temper and behavior?

Of the eight parenting styles, the authoritative parenting style, is the one I would select to deal with Terri’s temper. In this parenting style, parents are warm and sensitive to the child’s needs but remain firm in their expectations that children follow standards of behavior, to be the most desirable approach to discipline and behavior management (Hutchinson, 2019). Furthermore, authoritative parents explain and encourage discussion about rules, and when rules are violated they explain what the child did wrong and respond with actions that are closely connected to the misdeed (Hutchinson, 2019). The use of positive reinforcement will encourage good behavior and less stress. By setting firm limits and providing the rational of “why” these rules exist and “why” these decisions have been made, will encourage more critical thinking and reasoning on the child. At this age, they won’t fully understand something the way we would, but as their brain is developing, it will make sense over time. I feel the other parenting styles comes across as harsh and ineffective. The disengaged parenting style encourages parents to focus on their own needs rather than the needs of the child resulting in an unresponsive type of discipline (Hutchinson, 2019). The permissive parenting style encourages the parents to set rules that are unclear and leaves the child to make their own decisions (Hutchinson, 2019). Without a clear direction to be given, they don’t actually learn from the consequences. The authoritarian parenting style encourages parents to set narrow and specific rules with very little room to wiggle (Hutchinson, 2019). The child is expected to follow the rules without understanding why they have to and this results in a cold and harsh outcome.
