Cavaliere 1 Mitchell Cavaliere 5/6/2019 Professor Karen Middleton Conducting Political Analysis Module 14: Response to reading Palgrave Macmillan, in 2008, published “Research Methods in Politics” by Peter Burnham, Karin Gilland Lutz, Wyn Grant and Zig Layton-Henry. The twelfth chapter titled, Research and the Policy Process, is 20 pages long. The chapter dives into the relationship between the policy making progress and researchers. Policymakers search for research thathelps us understand society and how to improve it. In the first subheading, The supply side: what researchers can provide, it identifies four issues. First there is an inadequate supply of policy relevant research. Second there is a lack of access to research, data and analysis. Thirdthesupply of research is flawed due to the poor policy comprehension of researchers about both the policy process and how research might be relevant to the process. Last researchers may be ineffective communicators. The next subheading, The mediating effect of national structures and cultures reveals how the disciplinary history of political science in a particular country, the way that a country’s government is structured and prevailing cultural norms can all affects the forms of interaction between political science and policymakers. The next subheading, Bridging the gap explains how a variety of intermediaries or knowledge brokers are able to take the work developed by researchers and turn it into a form that is palatable and useful for policymakers. However the lack of dialogue between researchers and policymakers which leads to misuse of the
