Description

Kialey Moon 03/06/2021 COM-210 Dr. Eagles Outline (1) Introduction (a) Define Love: Love is defined as an intense feeling of affection and or feelings for someone or something. (Good Therapy). (i) We all love many things, ranging from our families, friends, pets, etc. We all love SOMETHING. Whether we want to admit it or not. (b) Love Your Neighbor Mindset (i) In the Bible, Jesus talks about loving your neighbor as you love yourself. This can be a tough feat for some, as many have a hard time prioritizing others over themselves. With that being said, let’s talk about ways we can apply the love your neighbor mindset effectively. (2) Body (a) Growing up in the Church (i) Growing up in the church, a lesson that is taught without fail is “love your neighbor as you love yourself.” However, loving people is a tall order. It becomes that much harder when someone does something that hurts you or hinders the view you have of yourself. It becomes a quick realization that despite what we have been told by our religious leaders and pastors, the “love your neighbor” expectation is one that we often fail to uphold. (b) Can we not do better than this? Can we not aim to achieve this simple commandment? (i) It might do some good if we rearrange our thoughts on the “love” talked about in this case. We often affiliate the word love with a tender, fuzzy, and warm feeling we have towards someone we care deeply about. But what if this isn’t the kind of love that we are being asked to share for our neighbors. Dr. Ken from the Daily Herald writes, “Such love is much more an attitude than a feeling. It is a way of viewing other people that

transcends our emotions and ultimately dictates our behavior” (Daily Herald, 2021). (ii) Dr. Ken also provides us with ways we can show the attitude of love. a. Reining in our tendency to automatically give back what we just got b. Listening with an extra bit of understanding and trying to put ourselves in other people’s positions c. Using our loving attitude to govern our responses rather than our hurt, angry or frustrated feelings. (iii)

How to love in the face of hostility and hatred 1. Many times, people do things to us that create space for resentment and hatred, making it nearly impossible for us to be capable of loving our neighbor as we are commanded to. Sam Wells sums it up nicely in her academic journal. “So what does loving mean in the face of hatred and hostility if it doesn’t mean being a doormat and it doesn’t mean a warm feeling? It means carefully and doggedly, not passionately or sentimentally, following the words of Jesus and the seven actions He commends to us” (Wells, 2015).

(3) Conclusion/Final Thoughts (a) How to we love our neighbors as we love ourselves, if the odds seem against us? (i) It sounds goofy, but we must first love ourselves before we can love others as the Lord has commanded us to. How can we love and appreciate someone for all that they are when we do not accept ourselves? (ii) Love God, this is also obvious. In the book of Matthew, Jesus gives two of His greatest commandments to the Pharisees. The first, love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. The second, love thy neighbor as you love yourself. This proves the magnitude of the love that flows through us when we love Him first!

(iii)

Love your neighbor in tangible ways. Whether someone has harmed you or not, telling someone that they are strong, valuable, and loved is a responsibility we must uphold for one another.

(iv) (Haas, May 10). (b) Final Thoughts… (i) God commanded us to love Him, as well as love our neighbors and our enemies. Although it is not always easy, this is the path to least resistance and overall well-being. The Lord always knows what’s best for us and we should strive to meet His will always!

Servant Speaker Servant speaking, especially regarding this topic is important to consider. I tried to focus on being a servant speaker in this assignment, not only because it was a requirement, but it also gave me the opportunity to practice putting myself in the position to give of myself so those around me may understand the Lord’s good news. This topic is important to me, so I wanted to take the opportunity to dive deeply into it. I think being genuine, and concise are two things I did in this speech that made me a servant speaker. I tried to really break down the concept, so the human mind could better understand a divine ideology.
