Description

Name _Michaela Arteaga___________________________ Speech Title _Don’t Let It Get To You ________________ Purpose _Motivation____________________________

Introduction I. Attention Getting Strategy Close your eyes and think of something that stresses you out, something that weighs down, makes it hard for you to be free, and do what you dream of doing. Now open your eyes II. Preview Statement Having or holding onto something toxic in your life for a long period of time can begin to drag you down and drift you away from what is really important in life. III. Credibility/ Tie to Audience At one point in our lives we have all had an issue whether that be with family, friends, or even a relationship. Body I. 1st Main Point A. Sub point 1- Psych Professor 1) Psych Professor walks around an auditorium talking to students about stress management. She pulled out a glass of water while students expected to be asked “half empty or half full?”. 2) The psych professor then asked the auditorium, “how heavy is this glass of water?”. All the students confused look on all of their faces wondering where she was going with this. B. Sub point 2 – Weight of the Glass 1) Each student started shouting out weights from ounces to a couple of pounds. Still confused about where this was going they were insistent on getting the right answer. 2) The professor then stopped all the shouting and told them that the weight of the glass did not matter. What matters is how heavy it would start to feel after holding it for a certain amount of time. Transition to next main point … weight of stress_____________ II.

2nd Main Point A. Sub point 1 – how long to hold the glass 1) if I hold it for a minute or two, it will be fairly light. If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make your arm ache a little. If I hold it for a fay straight, my arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop it on the floor.

2) The longer I hold it the heavier it will feel to me. B. Sub point 2 – 1) All the time in life when we are excelling there will always be someone who doesn’t want to see us be successful and they will do anything in their power to bring you down. Who says they are right and you are wrong. Who says they have more power than you do. Who says they get to control what happens in your life… They don’t. You do, you decide to ignore their negativity and to keep them quiet with all of your success. 2) In high school I was in track and my freshman year I won the district championship in hurdles. Transition to next main point III. 3rd Main Point… Personal experience A. Sub point 1 1) One of my teachers told me “ well its unfortunate that you won your freshman year!” and I was so confused so I asked why and he said “now there is no where for you to go but down.”. 2) At that moment I was shocked and I started to believe what he said and wanted to give up because I thought I might as well stop now so I can stop on a good note. Instead I let what he told me go and continued to personal and school records.

B. Sub point 2 – don’t hold onto what it toxic in your life 1) When we have something in our life that can bring us down to such a low level we need to learn how to let it go. Not everything in our life is going to be to make things easier, their will always be obstacles in the way 2) The longer we think about all the stress and obstacles in our way is less time we are spending trying to overcome these obstacles. Transition to Conclusion don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t Conclusion I.

Summary of main points If we hold onto what others say when they are trying to bring us down we won’t allow ourselves to fly. Look at all the obstacles and challenges in our way as ways to prove that we are worth what whatever goal we may be trying to reach.

II.

Closing Statement I want everyone to close their eyes again and think of that certain thing that you thought of in the beginning of my speech, take a deep breath and let it go, open your eyes and watch your self excel with nothing holding you down.
