Explain the role that Socratic thought and method has played in the discipline of western philosophy.  According to Socrates, we need to scrutinize what we believe and that we need to develop our own beliefs. His thoughts play into western philosophy because of his 5-step procedure that allows a person to find the real truth through a series of steps of refinement. His whole persona of intelligent non-conformity is still seen in action today. Outline the 5-step procedure for logical inquiry 1. Look around for statements thought to be common sense Marriage = happiness 2. Find exception Married but unhappy 3. If exception is found, then statement is false or imprecise 4. Reword statement to include exception Miserable in marriage if you married the wrong person 5. Continue process until you can no longer find an exception Truth lies within a statement impossible to disprove According to Socrates, how does one gain confidence?  According to Socrates for one to gain confidence they must not be swayed by others. This means a person needs to think for themselves and not just passively follow others, like sheep, because they are afraid to challenge order. He tells followers to challenge authority, that is how one gains confidence. According to YOU, what role does confidence play in courage?  If I am confident in what I believe I can do what is courageous when the time comes. For example, if there is a person bleeding out on the street, I can be confident in the fact that allowing them to lie there is not right., which helps me to act courageous and help....
