Grado en Estudios Ingleses PEC- Sintaxis Inglesa Course: 2020-2021 Mayo de 2021

IMPORTANT: The PEC must be handed in through aLF (“Tareas”). You can either (1) draw the trees, scan them and build a single PDF document, or (2) use a free app to make the trees in your computer (e.g. Syntax Tree Generator http://mshang.ca/syntree/).

a) Structural Ambiguity: Consider the two possible readings (1a and 1b) for the sentence in (1). How would you capture these two interpretations in terms of their syntactic trees? (0.5 points). (1)

“I couldn’t find a job in the post office”. a.

=working in the post office (0.25 points)

0.25

b.

=working somewhere else, not in the post office (0.25 points)

0.25

b) Complements or Adjuncts? Identify all the constituents that go with the verbal head in (2a) and (2b) and indicate if they are complements or adjuncts by drawing their corresponding trees. (0.5 points). (2)

a) One lives in the hope of becoming a memory today. (0.25 points)

0.25

In this case I believe that “In the hope of becoming a memory” works as a complement to the verb “lives” since the removing this big Prepositional Phrase would change the meaning of the sentence. “Today” may be an adjunct simply telling us the time or the moment when “one lives” and thus be removable.

1

b) The product of two even numbers is always even. (0.25 points)

0.2

“always even” would be a complement to the verb “is” as it is required for the sentence to keep its meaning and thus is daughter to V’ and sister to V.

In (2b) there is a clause with a VP projected from the copula "is". The complement of the copula is the AdjP "even" and the AdvP "always" is an adjunct.

c) Analyze the following sentences (3a and 3b). Draw and explain each of the steps taken in each corresponding tree, considering the type of DP- movement exemplified in each case (passive, raising, or both) (1 point).

2

(3)

a ) The news is certain to have been biased by the politician. (0.5 points) Here we have for example a DP “The news” that acts as the subject of “is certain” and “Have been biased”, this last one using the passive voice having “by the politician” as agent. “Is certain” is raising a predicate.

3

b) A new hospital will be built in summer by the local government (0.5 points) Here what we have is a passive with an agent in the final position.
