Description

Reflection on getting white card

I went to get a white card from the Bondi Training Centre on the 22/8/2020. The white card is necessary to enter any construction sites in NSW. Getting a white card involves understanding how to safely navigate worksites which is an essential part of many engineers work. I needed to get a white card for my job that involves labouring on construction sites. Before applying to get the white card I was expecting it to be very safety oriented but vital for my growth as a professional engineer. After completing the process of getting my white card I am satisfied that I now knew the essential safety information to navigate a worksite. The important worksite safety domain knowledge that I learnt was a product of filling out the workbook given to us to help facilitate videos and presentations that we listened to. My contribution was sharing some of my answers with the other students when asked by the presenter. The other participants also shared their answers with the class. The main decisions I made were asking questions when I wasn’t sure about ideas and concepts being discussed. Before the workshop I was feeling excited to learn more about typical environments that engineers will work in. During the activity I was happy as I began to appreciate the importance of engineers understanding fundamental concepts of safety on worksites. After the workshop I was relieved to finally have my white card and excited to start to put it to use in real worksites. The outcome of getting my white card was exactly as I expected and the information I learnt about safety was to be expected by considering the nature of the course. One of the most important lessons I learnt was to always report all incidents and near misses to the site manager/safety officer. The process of getting my white card has taught me the importance of having and adhering to safety procedures on engineering. The course illustrated the devastating impacts of disregarding safety and unnecessarily increasing risk. This program will allow me to be a safer, more self-aware engineer on the worksite. Another alternate activity that I could do is further safety training and onsite tours. These practices would allow me to further my awareness in situations where engineers are working on a construction site. I believe that by participating in this activity I gained valuable insight into the workings of an active worksite, and as such I believe it would be beneficial to do similar activities. These activities would be focused on normalising the environment that a civil engineer would work in on a construction site. These activities could include some sort of practical element to be more engaging and allow me to better understand the information being taught. I believe that by repeating similar activities, I will start to have an increased comprehension of the life of a on site engineer. I believe that through having a thorough understanding of the worksite I can incorporate ideas taught in USYD classrooms with my work site knowledge and gain an overall better understanding of civil engineering....
