Description

This video tells us both a part of the history of the RAE, as well as its function in relation to maintenance and the regulations that guide Spanish language. The Royal Academy was founded in 1713 under the reign of Felipe V, although its current headquarters was inaugurated in 1894, inside it we can find portraits of all of its rectors, from the first to the last. In 1726, following the precepts of its motto "clean, fixed and splendorous", the academics of the Royal Academy published their first work: The Dictionary of Authorities. This was offered in various editions of a single volume, acting as a dictionary of use, until the year 1780. This academy is made up of 46 members designated by the uppercase and lowercase letters of the dictionary, and their work is carried out jointly with the members of the other 21 corporations in America and the Philippines, forming the association of language academies since 1951 Spanish language. And the result of this cooperative work and this pan-Hispanic policy, are the last works developed and jointly approved by consensus, spelling, grammar and classics dictionaries. Although not only technical treatises on the language are published, but another series of books are also produced, such as commemorative editions of "Don Quixote", "One Hundred Years of Solitude" or "The City and the Dogs." In addition, its classic library contains 111 of the best Spanish literature, and year after year the academy tries to improve access to its patrimony to users, in order to publicize its activities, for this it relies on the state, in the “pro RAE” foundation, private sponsorships, in this way the academy promotes initiatives such as Corpes XXI which is a large lexical data bank that gathers in its first phase 300 million forms of Spanish throughout the world . The goal of the academy is to gradually disseminate on the web the contents of its lexicographic works, and the contents of its documentary collections, as well as libraries, legacies, files, archives ... Another of its most ambitious projects is the new historical dictionary of Spanish , which is already conceived as a publication destined directly to the internet, in the same way the academy also makes use of the networks as a means to resolve doubts and linguistic queries that users may need. All the work carried out by the Royal Academy is contained in the minute books, drawn up by the secretaries from August 3, 1713, to the present day. Staying loyal to its mission, the RAE, faithful to its commitment to citizens throughout history, is inhabited by the passionate life of words.
