4000 Stadium Drive College Park, MD 20742 May 11, 2019 Carrie Doolan Physician Assistant 57 West Dermatology 57 W 57th Street, Suite 1109 New York, NY 11019 Dear Ms. Doolan, At the spring career fair hosted at the University of Maryland, I had the pleasure of speaking with a recruiter for your office of 57 West Dermatology. In May, I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and will be attending medical school the following fall semester. My interest the medical field, especially a focus in dermatology, has compelled me to reach out to you about the internship opportunity your office is offering. As mentioned on my resume, I had the opportunity to work at my optometrist’s office over the course of two summers and winters where I gained valuable experience handling patients as well as familiarizing myself with the medical environment. Over my years at the University of Maryland, I have taken many courses that provided me with competency and a strong understanding for this job; courses include Organic Chemistry, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Organismal Biology and Biochemistry among many others. As a former president of my sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, I’ve also gained valuable leadership and communication skills that are necessary for the success of this job. My dependability and strong work-ethic paired with plenty of medical knowledge, makes me a great candidate for this position. I look forward to meeting with you and your colleagues to further discuss this once in a lifetime opportunity. Please don’t hesitate to request for more information, I am excited to hear from you in the near future. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Agnes Lin Agnes Lin [email protected] 240-671-5073

1. Adopting a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset Having a growth mindset is not only important for the internship, but for life in general as well. For example, an important aspect of a growth mindset is embracing challenges and learning from criticism. Although making mistakes or not understanding something is frustrating, it is also extremely quintessential to be able to accept it and learn from it instead. In the context of the internship, if I were to do something wrong or not know how to perform a certain task, instead of being upset about it, I can practice a growth mindset and preserve. I will also be able to find lessons and inspiration from the success of others and utilize their knowledge to advance my own. 2. Stopping stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination Being in a professional work environment, it is extremely important to remain openminded about everyone, especially the patients. Gaining an understanding behind the psychological reasoning of how stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination is generated, will help me prevent such dense thoughts to interfere with my professional life. Surely this internship will involve many interactions with people of all backgrounds, so it is crucial to be respectful and possess cultural competency. 3. Methods for collecting data Working at a dermatology office may entail research opportunities with pharmaceuticals or other treatments and medicines. With research often comes experimental design which is all about data. Having knowledge about how to effectively and accurately collect data for the study is essential for the accuracy and reliability of the results. For example, we learned about longitudinal studies which is when a sample of participants are tracked for an extended period of time. This proves useful to the job because we might have to test the long-term effects of a certain treatment to see if it’s effective and produces promising results....
