Situation

Covid has brought out a lot of challenges with family members not being able to see their loved ones. I had an experience where a daughte Identifying emotions was irate yelling on the phone at anyone that would listen. Before jumping to anger I was able to self reflect. I used patience and understanding to keep my own emotions in check. Together we created a solution to her concerns. Patience The last two years in healthcare have required a lot of resilience and preserverance. Rapidly changing protocols, policies and procedures can cause a lot of stress and fear of the unknown. I have needed respond quickly to higher patient ratios and sicker patients. It is important to practice self care so that the stressors at work don't take a toll on your work/life balance.

Very recently a patient stated he hated coming to our hospital because no one communicated with each other, and that left him unaware of what was going on. I took the time to sit with him at the bedside and listen to all his concerns. I ignored phone calls and gave him my complete attention. He was so appreciative that I cared enough to fill in all the gaps of information he was missing and explained his curren Active Listening plan of care. The patient made it to Mexico, and passed 2 weeks later surrounded by friends Planning & Organizing and family. Often as a bedside nure I have to stop and ask myself if I am caring for this patient to the best of my ability, the way they want to be treated. I remember a Empathy patient that had a lot of dietary resitriction due to their culture and religion. I was sure to check in with the patient and his family to accomidate these restricitons. Unfortunatly we did not have very many options on our hospital menu, but the kitchen manager was able to Cultural Awareness create new food items specifically for this patient and visiting loved ones.
