Emotional Intelligence GEB3213 Notes  Allows people to adjust to change in the workplace  Personal accountability and social responsibility o Transactional model of communication o How to handle any kind of relationship o Personal  How to manage myself  Realm of thoughts, emotions, feelings  Self-awareness o Social  Pertains to others  Colleagues, friends, parents  Empathy  Relationship management o Overlap between the two, boundaries  Boundaries get crossed, sometimes involuntarily  Need to have strong sense of self to have empathy and avoid crossing boundaries  Right distance allows people to prosper  Micromanagement- distance is too small and start telling people what to do  Lack of management- people don’t receive proper feedback  Emotional intelligence is different than being emotional o Intelligence is about being aware of emotions/feelings  Take a step back and be an observer  Business is about more than crunching numbers  Four components of emotional intelligence o Self-awareness  Ability to sustain behavior overtime despite setbacks  Long term commitment, not just knowing who I am  Ask yourself- how am I doing?  Grounding, come back to present moment  Awareness of strengths and weaknesses o Self-management  How effectively we manage our emotions  Be in touch with emotions, use them to know how to respond to challenging situations  Important in tough times  Tend to respond to situation by using a “mental shortcut”  Important to be aware and adopt strategies to manage emotions o Social Awareness (empathy)  How we manage the emotions of others  Sense people’s emotions without them verbalizing  Being aware of others’ feelings, needs, and concerns

 Pay attention to their actions Empathy- bond with someone at a human level, understand what is going on, but still a distance  Teaches us to be there for people  Possible for people to overstep boundaries and take on too much responsibility o Relationship Management  Ability to apply emotional understand in our dealings with others  Realm on communication, negotiation, understanding people’s agendas  Relationships have to be updated to thrive Demonstrating emotional self-awareness o Aware of own feelings o Know why feelings occur o Understand implications of feelings o Aware of strengths and limits o Open to feedback  Make yourself vulnerable in order to grow Struggling with emotional self-awareness o Easily irritated with others o May treat people in abrasive way o Feel imbalance in work, life, health, and family  Hard to align work with personal values and goals o Rarely seek out feedback and find it hard to accept  Brush off praise and criticism Demonstrating emotional self-control o Deal calmly with stress  Stress doesn’t throw you off balance o Display restraint and control your impulses o Stay poised and positive in difficult moments o Get the job done despite negative emotions Struggling with emotional self-control o React impulsively in stressful situations o Get involved in inappropriate situations because you can’t resist temptation o Become angry, depressed, or agitated o May regret behavior afterwards  Can have a negative impact on relationships with others 









The Brain  Brain stem- most primitive part of the brain (evolved first) o Adjusts basic vital functions:  Breathing  Body metabolism  Stereotyped reactions  Limbic system- developed with arrival of first mammals o Center of emotions, motivation, place of learning and memory





 Feeling of motherhood, protection, nurturing Neocortex- seat of rational thought o Responsible for understanding what senses perceive  Language, sensory perception, motor commands, special reasoning o Where emotions get processed Amygdala- two almond shaped glands in limbic system o Respond to stimuli such as fear, anxiety, stress  “fight or flight” o Responsible for survival o If brain notices connection between past and present- brain will provide us with that information  Cannot tell you if present is exactly like the past o Lack of emotional intelligence  Input  amygdala  reaction  “amygdala hijack”- immediate and intense reaction to external circumstances  Followed by regret o Different route with strong emotional intelligence  “high road”  Input  thalamus  neocortex  amygdala  response  More processing  Mirror neurons- mirror behavior that we see from others  Make us more aware of our behavior, could have a strong impact  Ripple effect of leadership behavior...
