Description

ANALYSIS AND REPORT ON GUEST SPEAKER: June Ip Guest speaker Teresa Shaver has worked in a variety of industries but her main focus is fundraising and grant writing between key stakeholders. She has navigated profit and non-profit environments with a high level of comfort and has even gone on to share her knowledge and experience through the creation of the Entrepreneurial Program and Sponsorship Program. She is passionate about making a difference and making a change in the world, she is a selfproclaimed “do-er” and “rainmaker” and she has experience in public speaking and motivating large groups. One challenge she faced early in her career was that she had a desire to make people have hope for the world and take on a positive view in the modern dark climate by “using specific tactics to improve the leader-follower relationship. (p. 205) She suggested that in order to overcome this we need to always see the best in our abilities and get rid of the false narrative that we are trapped or can’t do what we want to do. “No two individuals work alike” (p. 205). She says we need to maintain faith in one another as a society and constantly thrive for change. “Leadership means leading change”. (p. 464) Also, critical thinking skills can be very useful to sort out the “fake news”. “Thinking independently and being mindful of the effects of one’s own” (p. 201) She accredits her success to her ability to adapt quickly to her surroundings, her communication skills and cander (p. 272), her critical thinking skills, her self-confidence, and her optimism. “People rise to the top because they can see opportunities where others see problems” (p. 37), which is exactly what she did. I have a lot of respect for the way she handled this challenge and found it very refreshing to hear somebody speak with such optimism. She mentioned that her husband has the opposite view so good for her for maintaining faith. I see Teresa as a role model and I plan to be like her one day. One question that I had for her was: How do you stay optimistic when a majority of the media is constantly portraying negative

stories about how doomed society is. Should we ignore that, and not watch the news or is ignoring it just going to make the world an even worse place in the long run?...
