Description

October 24th, 2017 THE 120 Blood Wedding Blood Wedding is a tragic play in which two young men die battle each other to death for the love of their life. Blood Wedding was performed in California State University Dominguez Hills’ theatre. Blood wedding was written by Federico Garcia Lorca, and translated by Brendan Kennelly. It was also directed by Marla Ladd. The play is about a couple that is engaged, Arman Bryant, and Symphony Praise Kelly, unfortunately the bride to be cousin, Jessie Richard, is married with the bride to be ex- lover, Leonardo portrayed by Devonta Price. This causes conflict when the ex- lover finds out that the bride to be is getting married. The ex lover confesses that he still in love with her and makes the bride to be question if she should get married the day of her wedding. Although she still gets married, she runs away with her ex- lover and leaving the groom behind. As the groom finds the bride to be with the ex- lover, they duel to the death. Throughout the play one may question the theme, the performers, and if the performers got their message across in the play. To begin with, from the start we know the play has some sort of tragedy from the title. The title conveys that it is a Blood Wedding, the audience questions whether the wedding has something to do with death, or murder. The title itself was very appropriate since the wedding itself leads to two deaths. I believe that this play would be categorized under tragedy, many of the characters were hurt by the fact that the bride took off with Leonardo, as well as the deaths of Leonardo and the groom. The soliloquy the groom’s mother also foreshadows tragedy. When she mention the knives and how they have taken not one, but two of the most important men in the

world, her oldest son and her husband. The groom to be simply tells his mother that nothing will happen to her and he would be her happiness until she dies. Another theme one may see in the play is love. The wedding itself shows the act of two people in love willing to spend the rest of their lives together. The dialogue the couple has for each other makes it obvious how much they love each other. I don’t quite remember the quote word for word, but the groom mentions to the bride how he can’t wait to see her the day of their wedding, and she replies how she could not wait to be in his arms. As well as the much love and support the groom’s mother has for her son, the mother is very eager talking to the father-in-law how proud she is of her son for finding someone he loves, and cannot wait for his son to have babies. To continue the performers were overall amazing. To begin with the main character the groom. He comes off as a sweet and loving man. The actor in a sense makes the character look innocent and loving towards everyone around him. On the contrary the bride cannot be trusted. From the start the character always looked unsure. She realizes how unsure she was of the wedding from the moment that Leonardo tells her that he loves her. The actor also portrays the tone of unsure in her voice when her butler is helping her get dressed for the “happiest day of their life”. The mother of the groom is a very positive person, although she has lost her husband and her son, she doesn’t let that hold her back from feeling eagerness for her son. From the first scene of the play we do see how hurt she is from the deaths of her son and husband but she continues to look forward, and be strong. The father-in-law comes off as a successful man, living in a beautiful house with a butler. The butler brings the whole play together with his sense of humor and his sexual puns and innuendos. Although day and night he works for the bride and father of the bride he seems very happy where he is in life. The actor brought the character to life

with his humor as well as tone of voice when playing the character. To move on, Leonardo, comes off as arrogant. The character does not care about anyone or their feelings but his. He doesn’t show mercy to the groom although it is the day of his wedding and confesses his love for the bride. He also has anger issues. As soon as he finds out the bride and groom are getting married he has a big fit as well as goes on a rampage to his wife. The wife’s character comes off as smart. She understands that her husband was never in love with her and only with her cousin. She is a little bit naive in realizing it though. She pretends that he is having a bad day and in the end he truly does care for her. To conclude, the play overall was a good play. Although too long for something that could’ve been done in an hour instead of two. There were some unnecessary scenes for example the three men singing in the forest cutting wood while look for the bride. As well as the witch that appears in the woods. The ending of the play seemed like they were just trying to make the play longer....
