Topic 7 DQ 1 After reviewing the "Finding Your Purpose" section in The Beginning of Wisdom, discuss some of the ways that people might discover their purpose. How does the Christian concept of missio Dei fit into a Christian's sense of purpose?

In the text, Topic 7 discusses purpose and how we may find ours. It mentions a movie with a man named Frederick Buechner who was a missionary to China and also a runner. When questioned by his sister, he said that this was a God given talent and not to be wasted, it was part of his purpose and no purpose that is given by God is more important than another. So one way is to find your God given talents when looking for purpose. What impact can those talents and skills make that follow the word of God. Another way comes from the text with Frederick Buechner (1993), author, pastor, and theologian, said that a good way to find your purpose, to know what mission God is calling you to, is to discern the work "that you most need to do and that the world most needs to have done”. It is further explained that your purpose can be found by seeing the needs of the world that your work can impact. By finding what is meaningful to you and needed by the world, what touches you deep within your heart and by knowing that what you do is satisfying and fulfilling, you can find your purpose.

The concept of mission Dei fits into a Christian’s sense of purpose as “God’s mission, is the mission of his followers” (Diffey, 2020). God had a mission of never giving up on humanity even after the fall and his relentless work of teaching us right from wrong and sending his son to die for us, was all part of his mission to one day give us the world he intended for us without sin and suffering. So our purpose in life is to do God’s work in one way or another to contribute to God’s mission of a beautiful world with man living in peace and love and sharing his word.

DQ 2 How might someone in your academic discipline or future vocation be able to live out a Christian missional purpose?

In my current role in Operations for Army National Guard, I can see opportunities that would allow me to live out a Christian missional purpose. I do plan to stay in this field, and feel that educating myself allows me to help and support our soldiers. While many see military in a negative way, I see it as necessary to protect the laws of our nation that were founded by the laws that God gave us. This alone directly supports a Christian mission. For my specific position, I help coordinate trainings and also support our soldiers with HR type scenarios and onboarding. I find that I have the skill and God given talent to plan meaningful trainings to protect our soldiers in protecting our nation or other allies in need of our support. Many times this means supporting them to fight and protect Christians and their beliefs in some parts of the world. Another aspect of my position, is that I onboard new soldiers so am almost the initial mentor to soldiers. Many want to join due to problems in their life or feeling like they cannot find their own purpose. This class has helped me find wording that will be beneficial in

helping soldiers make good moral decisions in tough times and remind them that they have a purpose and perhaps provide the knowledge I have to assist them in finding out their skills and purpose. As a mentor, I have the ability to make an impact through my own actions and in obeying the commandments and serving and leading by example and providing morally good advice when needed to help fulfill Gods mission, which as stated in the text, is the mission of his followers. Hopefully my impact on someone else may have a domino effect and indirectly help others in carrying out God’s mission as well....
