Learning Guide Unit 1 Overview Unit 1: What is art, how do we study art? Topics:    

Defining art Identifying formal elements, media and purposes of art Applying basic art vocabulary Brief introduction of Egyptian and Mesopotamian art

Learning Objectives: 

students will be introduced to the study and practice of art history as directly connected to Ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian visual culture, basic definitions of art and the tools of visual analysis, art as a product of historical context, and basic historical chronology.

Introduction This first unit of the course is designed to get students comfortable with looking at and discussing art. It will also begin to explore the connections between artistic production and cultural, political and economic factors.

Discussion Forum Question Choose and identify your favorite work of art. Your choice can be from any time and place and can challenge the traditional definitions of art. What visual qualities make this item your favorite? Include in your discussion, as appropriate, descriptions of the artist’s (or creator’s) use of formal elements such as line, shape, color, space and other design elements. You may wish to include a link to an image of your chosen item (if available) to assist your classmates in their participation. Go to the Discussion Forum for Unit 1 and engage in a dialogue with your classmates on the above issues. You are expected to make at least three posts to the discussion board during the course of the discussion period and rate your classmates posts.

Written Assignment In an essay compare and contrast the sculptures below, considering the effect the intended purpose or function has on the appearance of the sculptures. Essays should be well-written and organized and contain an introduction and conclusion. Please proofread your work for spelling, syntax and grammatical errors. All sources used must be properly cited in a works cited list.

Learning Journal The Learning Journal is a tool for self-reflection on the learning process. In addition to completing directed tasks, you should use the Learning Journal to document your activities, record problems you may have encountered and to draft answers for Discussion Forums and Assignments. The Learning Journal should be updated regularly (on a weekly basis), as the learning journals will be assessed as part of your Final Grade. Making reference to resources listed in this unit's Reading Assignment, please address the following:
