How Does Smoking Affect Function? (10 Points)

Websites Used (4 Points)

Cilia

Cilia are eyelash-like filaments that catch particles and remove them from the respiratory tract so they don’t get into the alveolar sacs.

Smoking can immobilize or completely kill the cilia. This would make it impossible to remove the particles, so they would end up in the respiratory tract. They would get stuck in the mucous membrane.

Mucous Membranes

The mucous membrane secretes a mucus that traps small particles.

Smoking makes the cells within the mucous membrane multiply and enlarge. This makes the mucous membrane create excess mucus. Your lungs cannot clean out the amount of mucus successfully so it would make you cough.

Alveoli

The alveoli exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from the bloodstream.

Smoking breaks the walls of alveoli because they are made of elastic. After the walls are broken, it makes it harder for them to effectively bring in oxygen and push out carbon dioxide.

Capillaries

The capillaries surround the air sacs and carry oxygen to the tissues and cells throughout the body.

The nicotine in cigarette smoke makes blood vessels smaller and have less volume. When they become like this, it is very difficult for them to transport oxygen and nutrients all over the body.
