Why is using Emotional Intelligence is a necessary attribute for a leader?

The term emotional intelligence was first used by professor Michael

Beldoch in his book ‘‘Social

Encounters; Readings in Social Interactions’ ’ in 1964. However, the term became widely known until 1995 when Daniel Goleman, science journalist, wrote ''Emotional Intelligence; Why it can matter more Than IQ.''

This book challenged what many people had always assumed; that the key to success was

IQ. Decades of studies have found that people with average IQs, but with emotional intelligence are more likely to succeed than those with higher IQs.

Daniel Goleman defined EQ as ''a person's ability to manage his feelings so that those feelings are expressed appropr iately and effectively.'' He also wrote a Harvard Business Review landmark ar ticle ‘‘What Makes a Leader?’ ’ were he created a five branch system of essential components that define emotional intelligence; The first component is emotional self-awareness, which consists in knowing how you feel, and how your actions and emotions may affect other people . Also, being self-aware means you know your strengths an d weaknesses. The second is self-management, which means controlling or redirecting one's emotions and to anticipate consequences before acting. The third one is motivation, which mainly consists in using emotional factors to achieve goals and succeed. Last, but not least, empathy, that is defined as being careful with other's emotions, and social skills , that requires to manage relationships and be a great communicator.

Several studies have proven that these abilities play an impor tant role determining success, both in one;s personal life and in the workplace . Therefore , the most successful leaders are the ones who, not only have the technical skills required for the job, but have also mastered most of these five essential elements of emotional intelligence . Besides the right personal background, and work experience, it is clear that EQ is an asset to a professional life. Working with others consists in interacting with their emotions, and tr ying to understand them, this can build a better working environment and positive team work results. People who apply these five elements are generally more successful and can aspire to a leadership position.

In conclusion, in a global competitive job market, being able to develop and understand how emotional intelligence works,

gives people the knowledge to become great leaders. As Goleman once said, ‘‘If

your emotional abilities aren’t in hand, if you don’t have self-awareness , if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can’t have empathy and have effective relationships , then no matter how smar t you are, you are not going that far.’’
