BUS3011 – Fundamentals of Management

Atha Corporation Application Questionnaire Directions: Please provide responses to the prompts below. The expectation is that each response is from 750 to 1,000 words in length. Submit this document in the courseroom.

Personal Management Experience Describe an instance (750–1,000 words) where you were required to manage a group, team, project, or other operation. This does not necessarily need to be in a business setting or that you were formally titled manager. For example, it could be how you managed an event, or how you managed a budget for a group, or other area where there were other people involved and where management skills were demanded.

As a representative of Sony electronics such as televisions, sound systems, headphones, and cameras, my job has me train Best Buy employees on the details of our company products. As such, I find myself setting up and leading product training classes for employees in their respected departments. The goal of these classes is to increase employee knowledge around our products and increase sales. When planning a training event, I work closely with store management to ensure as much employee attendance as possible. I also make sure to spread the word to the employees ahead of time build excitement around the event. Furthermore, I plan a one on one training with the department supervisor ahead of the event, its vital to have the department supervisor caught up on product knowledge so they can make sure employees are utilizing the information from the training event. The day of the training I arrive early to make sure all products and demonstrations are setup for the training to ensure a smooth transition from product to product. This ensures I don’t waste valuable time that I have with employees working on a product demonstration. I always plan a little breakfast buffet of sorts when planning training events, I find it extremely important to the learning of the products. Most employees show up to these early morning trainings having not eaten anything, I don’t want anyone focusing more on their hunger than the product they are 1

BUS3011 – Fundamentals of Management there to learn about. When running these types of events, I like to lean on the department management. I find it beneficial to split up employees into small groups as to give a better experience and answer any questions employees may have during the product training. I also find that this helps with keeping distractions and talking between employees to a minimum, this I believe maximizes product retention and the need for retraining.

Analyze Your Approach to Managing Analyze your approach (750–1,000 words) to the situation that you have identified from a management perspective. Reference specific examples of your actions to illustrate and support your analysis. What is important is the approach you take to appraising your actions, not whether or not you were successful. Consider some of your actions in the following areas: • Planning. • Organizing. • Leading. • Controling.

To better improve on the product training events I’ve decided to analyze my overall approach and execution. I will examine my actions in key areas such as planning, organizing and leading. The goal is to self-evaluate to achieve maximum efficiency and uncover ways to improve. When planning events utilizing the management and employees helps to save time and resources of my company, along with builds awareness and ownership of the store staff members. Getting the employees of the store involved is vital in the planning of these events as it can save me valuable time that could be spent elsewhere in an area that only I can work. Another approach that may be useful when planning these events could be to ask the store to not make it mandatory and allow for employees to sign up for the training. This approach could be beneficial to both my company and the store in question. With allowing for employees to freely choose it

BUS3011 – Fundamentals of Management will assure the people showing up are there for the right reasons. Similarly, this will save the store money as people not wanting to be there won’t sign up and therefore the store won’t have to pay the employee for their time spent at the training event. The organization of the product training events is by far the most complicated aspect of the event. This step involves myself deciding what products to demonstrate and how I will go about it. This method seems beneficial, perhaps allowing for the employees that work with these products to add input in what they would like more training in would see even better results. Allowing for this would again free up more time I would’ve spent organizing to allow for improvements on my presentations of the products. To improve on my own leadership abilities, it’s important to get feedback from those I’m leading. One way I can go about this is by implementing a system of reflection. I could add a small survey/questionnaire at the end of the training. Although self-reflecting can be very important it is also vital to get outside information. This process can allow for deeper insight in how I lead the event, how I’m received by others and how can I improve myself and the event in all facets.

Characteristics of an Effective Manager Imagine that a department in a company that you work for is suffering from employee discontent due to a long-term erosion of trust with management. You have been put on a committee to hire a new manager and have been asked for input on what type of manager should be hired. Describe the top two characteristics (750–1,000 words) that you would look for in a candidate that directly address the problem and why you believe they are appropriate for the situation.

Careful consideration must be taken in the hiring of the next Home Theater department manager, as we’ve seen no improvement in sales or the discontent of the employees. I believe the next manager should possess key characteristics that will allow for them to tackle the issues at hand. The two characteristics I see as most important are, communication and transparency.

3

BUS3011 – Fundamentals of Management I believe plugging in a manager with great communication skills will tackle our issue from both directions. Firstly, having a manager that will communicate efficiently and effectively to employees should build back up that trust that was broken by previous managers. Secondly, the communication between department head and upper management is crucial to rolling out any policy or department changes. Communication skills are vital in a manager as most of what a manager does is receive and relay information among other job duties. Hiring a manager that can communicate well with department staff will ensure we get the department back on track and more importantly address the lack of trust in management. The next key characteristic I want to see in our next manager is transparency. A manager who is transparent with their employees will see improved productivity and satisfaction. If employees feel they are getting the truth up front regardless if they are in favor of the information, they will most likely not allow the information to affect them negatively. Similarly, our employee satisfaction will rise when we have department wide transparency. Knowing what to expect even if it’s not what the employee wants will help them better handle the situations, this will lead to a favorable work environment. A favorable work environment will see all aspects of business improve exponentially.
