Carly Taylor CMCN 100 Informative Speech Outline Dog Adoption: Saving a Life While Gaining a Family Member I. Introduction A. Attention Getter – Tell the story of adopting Mojeaux 1. How many of you have a pet? a. Now out of those who raised their hands, how many of you adopted your pet from a shelter? b. Have the rest of you considered pet adoption before? B. Credibility Statement – Well, like many of you, I have a pet too. I actually adopted my dog from the shelter about five years ago. 1. Having been someone who has worked and volunteered at shelters and been in charge of adopting pets out, I can credibly say that I have seen the pros of pet adoption and how it has affected people’s lives. 2. Additionally, I performed extensive research on this topic in preparation for this speech. C. Thesis Statement – Dog adoption is a great route to take when adding a pet to your family because it has all the benefits that come from having a pet but cheaper, and you’re helping an animal in need of love and care. D. Relevance Statement – So, if any of you have ever considered or are currently considering getting a new four-legged friend, this speech will give you more information about a great way to expand your family while saving a life. E. Preview Statement – Today, I am going to inform you about the history of dog adoption, the mental and social benefits of adopting a dog, and the financial benefit of adopting rather than buying from a breeder. F. Transitional Statement – So, let’s start with the “bottom line” of dog adoption – the history. II. The History of Dog Adoption A. Dog adoption and rescue started in 1824 when The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed, giving birth to an organized welfare group for dogs. This set the foundation for a shift in the public’s perspective of dogs. 1. According to thedogbakery.com, before this, pounds existed and animals who weren’t reclaimed were killed for their monetary value. 1 B. In the 1960s and 70s private animal shelters were formed in addition to municipal ones, in an effort to bring in strays and find them homes.1 1. Because of this, the public’s opinion about strays started to shift and people began to view them as potential pets rather than public health hazards.

C. Transitional Statement – So not only does dog adoption have an extensive history to back it up, it also proves to be beneficial for mental health. III. The Mental Benefits of Adopting a Dog A. Pets are a great motivation for people. Dogs are especially great at encouraging owners to get exercise and this can be beneficial for those suffering from depression or PTSD. B. Caring for a pet also gives you a sense of purpose and achievement. 2 1. Most of the time, people with depression can start to feel useless or like they want to give up but having something besides themselves to take care of can feel rewarding to them. 2. You might be wondering why a dog has to be adopted to help with mental health, and the truth is, they don’t have to be. However, knowing that you saved a life in the process gives you even more purpose. C. According to mentalhealth.org.uk, cChildren with ADHD or ADD can also benefit from working with and keeping a pet. Taking charge of the jobs that come along with having a pet, such as a pet care schedule, helps a child learn to plan and be more responsible. 2 1. This responsibility gives a child with ADHD or ADD something more to focus their energy on than just their schoolwork and behavioral challenges. D. Adopting a pet helps to take an animal in need off of the street and out of the shelter, all the while requiring that you have your new friend fixed, ensuring that pet overpopulation comes to an end, one owner at a time. E. Transitional Statement – Of course, the mental benefits of dog adoption lend themselves to the last benefit of dog adoption – the financial benefits of dog adoption. IV. The Financial Benefits of Adopting a Dog A. Usually when you adopt a dog, the cost of spay/neuter, vaccinations, and microchipping are all included in the adoption fee. This is instantly saving you money upfront. 1. According to humanesociety.org, tThe cost of an adoption is much cheaper than what the shelter has already done for the dog. 3 B. Adopting a dog is cheaper than buying from a breeder. 1. According to vetstreet.com, “Buying a dog can easily range from $500-$1000 not including spay/neuter and vaccinations. Whereas, adopting a dog usually ranges from $50 to $200 with everything already done.” 4 V. Conclusion
