Disc and ted talk week 8...

Description

Watch this Damon Horowitz 15min Ted Talk and do the following: 1. As discussed in the talk, think about a decision you had to make and you were worried about doing the right thing. Reflect on it and explain how you came up with the decision (as discussed in the talk). 2. Having read through the first 6 (and almost the entire text at this point), chapters, do you think you will use any of the theories going forward to think through your decisions? 3. Are ethics hard and really require thinking? Do you think it is important that you think before you speak? How do you do that (most people just say what they think before even thinking about it)?

1. At a job I had in the past at a golf course, there was an employee who oversaw the golf shop and handled all the gold range payments. I was in the shop numerous times when people paid in cash and he would not put it into the register, but instead in a different drawer. I talked about this with other coworkers, and they also witnessed it and we all thought that there was a certain method he had of keeping track of cash from the golf course versus cash from the driving range. After a while, we decided to bring it up to the manager who installed cameras and caught the worker stealing money from the register for months. It was very difficult to turn on an employee and tell the manager, but it was easier when doing it in a group, rather than by myself. Especially if the worker was doing it for a certain reason and I alone accused him of stealing, it would make a very awkward work environment. 2. After reading through the text so far, I do think I will use some of the theories I have learned about in the book so far. I really enjoyed the theories with virtue and justice and will instill them for future dilemmas. 3. I believe that ethics are hard and take a lot of thinking through the whole scenario and seeing the result. All the decisions that come up in life have a moral dilemma and making sure you choose the right one is an extremely important factor to it. As you speak, you need to process what you are going to say so that it comes out making sense and is appropriate for the scenario. If you speak to your friends, you are going to talk in a different style than if you are talking to your manager or professor. This means you need to think more about the context of who you are talking to before speaking with your manager than just a friend. The major cases involving Enron and WorldCom are important to be able see that companies can be evil and create fraud. Everyone assumed that companies were acting as they should, and these were a big wake up call to the public. The companies now need to act ethically and be investigated in depth so that these fraud mistakes do not happen again....
