Description

Noah Cleary Ms. Elissa Vinnik Junior English Green Class December 8, 2015 School Uniforms Talking Points People spend their entire childhoods being told that they can do anything, be anyone, or pursue any dream they have. How is it that parents tell their kids these things, then send them to schools that enforce conformity in mind and body? An increasing number of schools are requiring uniforms that don't fulfil their intended goals. School uniforms are intended to remove socioeconomic barriers, yet after a few months it is evident who has enough money to buy more than one uniform and who only has one uniform. This policy of forcing everyone to dress the same and penalizing them for failure to comply is used in prisons and the military. Talk about my story of 6th grade where I wore almost all black shoes and then missed a test because I could not leave the office out of dress code. 47% of high poverty schools and only 6% of low poverty schools require uniforms. School uniforms easily indicate to parents and students which schools are “Bad” and “Good”. As lower income people can only afford a few uniforms, the socioeconomic differences arise again when these uniforms wear out much faster than more affluent children who can buy more uniforms. If school uniforms are intended to do so many positive things but in actuality don’t do any of these things, why do we have them?...
