Rachel Vander Martin USING EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING — D173 KQM2 TASK 3: INFORMING PARENTS [email protected] ID# #001265509

Wonderful 4/5th Grade Rachel’s Family Group!

I am so excited for the upcoming school year. As we move into preparation for next week, there are a few housekeeping items that I would like to share with our families. Please take time to look over all the information and contact me if you have any questions.

“Today’s students must be prepared to thrive in a constantly evolving technological landscape” (ISTE Standards for Students | ISTE. (n.d.)). Our school has adopted a blended learning model for incorporating tech in the classroom. We follow the ISTE standards for students. These standards are designed to empower and educate students to allow them to progress in a student driven process. Below are strategies on how we will incorporate tech into our classroom and the standards that match them. These standards can be found HERE.

Tech In The Classroom: All students will be assigned a ChromeBook at the beginning of the year. This will happen the first 3 days of school. These devices will stay in the classroom during the week. Students will have the ability to check out their device for evening homework and weekend projects. This matches the standard for an Empowered Learner.

Digital Citizenship: “Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical” (ISTE Standards for Students | ISTE. (n.d.)). Students will be required to complete their digital citizenship class, assignments and then sign the digital contract. Parents will also be asked to participate in the digital citizenship class and co-sign the digital contract. The information regarding this program and expectations can be found on our school website. This matches the standard for Digital Citizenship.

Digital Student Portfolio and Digication: Students will be required to maintain their digital student portfolio and participation in digication. What this looks like is students will be uploading their school work and projects to their google drive and digication page. Then at the end of the semester the students will be creating a slideshow in their digication to present their work at student-led conferences. “Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others” (ISTE Standards for Students | ISTE. (n.d.)). This is important and vital for students, because their portfolios are what their grades will be based on.. This matches the standard for Knowledge Constructor.

Devices in class: “Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally” (ISTE Standards for Students | ISTE. (n.d.)). We are going to have lesson materials, assignments and social/emotional connections digitally available to students in class. This will allow for

students to access lesson material at any time as well as connect with other students and instructors. This will also help students who are needing differentiation for accessibility and for accommodations. Our school website has a great access page that can help parents understand about connecting our students to the digital classroom. This matches the standards for Creative Communicator, Knowledge Constructor and Global Collaborator.

All students will be able to access their digital resources from one central place. From there, students will have the ability to connect to the programs, activities and communicate with teachers. Here are some features that are important that you check out.

Clever: This is our online digital platform that will house all our programs for students to easily access. Students will be directed to this log in as soon as they log into their chrome books. All online programs and resources are found on their Clever page. You can learn more about that recourse on our school webpage or the Clever Website.

Google Drive: This resources will be used on a daily basis from lessons, homework, portfolios, collaborations and projects. Students will have daily work on this platform and will be trained in using it appropriately. Check out the Google Drive homepage for more information and our websites on the parent training videos.

Reflex Math: This resource will be used on a daily basis in the class and at home. This will be a game based, supporting our math fact fluency development. Students will be given time each day to complete the requirement of getting their “green light”. It will be ok if students need to check

out devices or use home devices to complete this activity. You can check out the Reflect Math Page to learn more about this program.

I-ready Math and Reading Lessons: Students will each have an i-ready reading and math lesson assigned to them weekly. These are to be done in class or at home. These are online, game based lessons that will be supportive to our math, reading and phonic lessons in class. They are found on the students Clever page. Participation in these activities will be included in the students final grade. More information and connection can be found on our school’s website and on the i-Ready page.

I look forward to the school year and getting to know each of your children. I know that adapting to tech can be overwhelming. I am here to assist and help our students each step of the process. That same promise goes to families. I am available this week or next for any tech support and questions regarding assisting your child in their educational journey.

See you all next week! Ms. Rachel
