Topic: Rock Your Sox Box Names: Laura Johnson, Keely Wissel, Moniah Jones, Tessa Schmitt Organizational Pattern: Monroe’s Motivated Sequence General Purpose: To Persuade Specific Purpose: To persuade our audience to buy our product (Rock Your Sox Box) so they never have to worry about the hassle of buying socks again. Central Idea: Our audience should buy our product because it supports your feet, it is easy to get, and it is a way to express fashion and personality.

Introduction: Just this past weekend, I had to hike from group meetings to the grocery store all the way back to my dorm when it started raining! My shoes were soaked; even worse, my socks were soaked! As college students, we always have to be on our toes for what the day brings. Students have to trek across campus multiple times a day to get from class to work to meetings and back home all with only so much time to spare. Upon our survey done in class, over half of respondents said that they get around campus day to day by walking. That’s a lot of wear and tear on our clothing items, especially our socks and shoes. This causes a major need for students to have comfortable footwear for all seasons and weather. Our product will provide satisfaction for this need. Our product will allow students to express themselves, be prepared for all weather, and easily provide them with an everyday essential.

(Transition: Now if you don’t want to start off your week on the wrong foot, like I did, then you need to be aware of the factors that play a role in your everyday life.)

I.

With a lack of socks or lack of renewal of socks, self-expression and protecting yourself from changing weather conditions can be more difficult.

A. Sometimes, especially if you work or go to school somewhere with a dress code, expressing yourself can be hard to do. 1. But, expressing yourself is a critically important thing to do, especially in the workplace, because according to Jenny Marchal from lifehack.org on November 28, 2017, “people who are nonconformists can potentially be viewed as being more high status and more competent than those who conform to social norms.” 2. Socks are an easy way to make yourself stand out from the rest of the crowd. B. Throughout the year, Muncie residents experience all types of weather. 1. In the Midwest, we face weather extremes from season to season. a) In the winter, temperatures drop well below freezing and precipitation levels rise due to the increase in snowstorms. b) But, in the summer, temperatures skyrocket, and precipitation drops below average. c) In our audience analysis survey, over half of our respondents said to that to some degree they are not always prepared for Muncie’s changing climate. d) The apparel we chose to wear is key in the preparation for these quickly-changing temperatures in order to protect our bodies from infections or illnesses. 2. According to Jenny Cook from NetDoctor on September 10, 2017, when it comes to wearing socks, “depending on the level of sweatiness of the foot, there may be issues with too much moisture in the feet, which can leave you vulnerable to fungal infections such as athlete's foot.” C. As college students, people who are notorious for being busy, it can be hard to find time to shop for things like clothing.

1. That’s why online shopping has become so popular-- students don’t always have the time to physically go to a store to shop. a) According to OnCampus Research in the fall of 2013, “96% of students had made at least one online purchase in the last 30 days, with almost 9% clicking to buy online six or more times in that period.” 2. But even with online shopping, it can be hard to remember to buy items that don’t seem as necessary, like socks. a) In our audience analysis survey, when asked which clothing items they view as a necessity, many respondents did not list socks as one of them. 3. That’s why the popularity of subscription boxes has grown so much in such little time.

Transition: With such an active lifestyle, it seems like we always have one foot in the door, and one foot out. So, we need a product that will take care of a little worry that impacts our overall day. II. The need for socks might not pop into your mind until the moment you step into that puddle on an unexpectedly rainy day. If only there was an easy way for you to renew your socks for each season without having to put it on your to do list... A. Well now there is! We have created a subscription box that allows you to renew your socks every season. The Rock Your Sox Box! B. As stated before, socks are a great way for people to show their personality. With the Rock Your Sox Box you will receive socks that are tailored to your taste lifestyle, and personality. 1. When you sign up for the Rock Your Sox Box you have the opportunity to take a quick survey giving us some insight into what types of socks you

would prefer including length, color, patterns/seasons, and occasion. 2. Dr. Adam Galinsky, a social psychologist from the Northwestern University, conducted a study that was cited in the previously mentioned life hack article. This study “showed what we wear affects the way we think, feel and act” including socks! Wearing socks you love will give you more confidence and will improve every aspect of your life. C. In addition, the Rock Your Sox Box will allow you to be prepared for every season no matter what that Muncie sky decides to unleash. 1. Living in the midwest the weather seems to get more and more unpredictable and extreme every year. By offering socks for every season our subscription box will keep your feet safe and healthy from the elements. 2. In the rainy spring, we will provide waterproof socks in your subscription box, protecting your feet while your walking around campus. 3. In the bitter cold winter, we provide thermal and wool socks that are sure to keep your toes nice and warm. a. Dr. Lance Silverman warns about the harmful consequences of wet socks and cold feet, “Aside from being uncomfortable, wet socks can cause a couple issue with your feet. They can lead to: sores and blisters, rashes or athlete’s foot, trench foot, or frostbite.” D. Besides keeping you healthy and showing off your style the Rock your Sox Box is also the easiest way to buy socks. 1. It’s hard enough in college to balance your school work, extracurriculars, and social life with the added pressure of renewing your socks every season. For this reason, our product is the perfect solution because we

will send you your Rock Your Sox Box right to your door. 2. Subscription boxes are one of the easiest and most economical forms of shopping for essential items such as socks that should be replaced fairly frequently. However, people often don’t consider it when online shopping. 3. According to an article written by Dr. Lance Silverman on August 30th, 2017 for anklefootmd.com, “Aside from the obvious development of a hole in your sock, if you notice any of these characteristics in your socks, you should probably consider throwing them out and investing in new ones: a) The socks droop down on your foot. b) One part of the sock aggravates or rubs against one area of your foot. c) They won’t come clean even after washing.” 4. Subscribing to the Rock Your Sox Box will allow you to renew your socks and decrease your risk of overwearing socks for as long as you’d like. 5. Subscribe once and receive a box at the start of every season. If you get cold feet you have the option to cancel your subscription at anytime. (Transition: But you won’t want to miss out on subscribing to our seasonal sox box because of all the benefits you get from it.) II.

Visualization A. Benefits of buying our product 1. Buying our product allows you to positively express yourself because we offer socks in every color and pattern. 2. With our product you will get instant support when walking in any condition because our socks offer support for every lifestyle. a) In a Travel and Leisure article by Dobrina Zhekova in August

2018, it states: “If you are heading somewhere hot and planning to do a fair amount of hiking, avoid wool socks.” 3. Our product is especially great for college students. It’s done once a year and then students no longer have to worry about buying socks again. B. Consequences to not buying our product 1. Lack of preparation for all-season weather will result if you do not purchase our sox box because you will not have all the socks we offer for every season. 2. By not having socks in general, which is what we offer with our sox box, you risk more infections and illness. (1) According to a netdoctor article by Jenny Cook in September of 2017, she found that “a combination of excessive sweat, an ill-choice in fabrics and a lack of socks can create an ideal environment in which fungal infection can thrive.” (Transition: Would you like to avoid dealing with those dreadful and unnecessary consequences of not being subscribed to Rock Your Sox Box?)
