Description

REFLECTION ON CHAPTER-4 “SMILE” The primary reason I chose this chapter was its title. Even with its title, the author seemed to speak a lot to me. “Smile”, who doesn’t relate to a sweet and pleasant smile? Smile is a powerful tool which has the ability to bring joy in our lives. This is not just the idea being propagated throughout this chapter, but it is something we experience in each of our lives. The chapter is a beautifully written one which iterates the goods of a simple smile. It is simply intriguing how nonchalantly a smile could change the direction of our life. We may be having a bad day, a week or year, smiling constantly could keep us and the people around us positive. This chapter is something we could all relate to on a personal level. This is the reason I have chosen to reflect upon it (Korthagen, 2001). The initial pages of the chapter refer to how babies never fail to attract strangers. It is almost a usual scene for a baby to be flocked by multiple people at the same time. The reason is pretty obvious. Babies smile regardless of the situation or the mood. I could only imagine what change a constant smile could bring in my life. There is this intriguing fact that babies smile minimum 350 times a day as opposed to an adult smiling 150 times a day. This explains why we tend to be more stressed when we grow up. The chapter has beautifully tried to teach us the correct ways to smile and laugh our hearts out. I am sure following even half of the things mentioned here would change our lives. The world is a busy place. No one actually does care about your worries. It is common for someone to be depressed today and not being able to reach out. And this is just because they don’t feel at ease with anyone, and rightly so. We usually judge a person by his/her face. Imagine someone looking at you in an expressionless manner. We wouldn’t even feel like looking at them, let alone asking for their help. I feel that this is where a smile could work wonders. Smile brings out the real shine of a person. A smiling face is like a mirror, it never fails to reflect. I have been in numerous situations where a simple smile of mine

has gone through a flock of people like a chain reaction. It really lightens up the environment (Korthagen, 2001). The chapter is indeed an informative one as well. It is a scientifically proven fact that smile increases a person’s longevity, and rightly so. If we manage to be joyous even for half of the day, most of stresses would be reduced manifold. That would only help us maintain a perfect balance in our routine. I have observed that as people grow up, they tend to think more about the negative side of things. Even with me, I used to be excited about every other thing when I was a child but now things have come to be more materialistic to me. As iterated by the author, we all need smiles to lighten up our lives. After reading this chapter, I promise one thing to myself. I will smile as much as possible in a day and further try to put smiles on at least three faces a day. I have a very personal experience with smile. We have a guy named Smith in our peer group. He is not someone who grew up with us. He joined us in our school after having studied in another city. He has this odd charm to himself and I’ve come to realize that it is because he smiles all the time. Whatever the situation, however hard the circumstances seem, he never fails to stick that smile to his face. Initially, we all used to look down at him and make fun of him for roaming around smiling like a crazy one. But soon we realized that, the habit of Smith’s which we made fun of him for, is the reason we all love being around him. There is a special energy we feel when we are around Smith. I knew it had to do with his ever-smiling face, but this Chapter has particularly helped me conform to it (Korthagen, 2001). The most attractive thing about the whole writing is that nothing mentioned by author is something we can’t do or needs too much of efforts. It is a deal which would only bring joy in our lives. Smile is the reason why we love being around some specific persons. It is the kind of vibrations they transmit. It is iterated in the chapter that as important as it is to smile, it is more so important to not fake a smile. Faking a smile could have reverse psychological effect on our minds. It is a situation where we are 1

suppressing our mood and imposing something else on it. This is the reason why a fake smile fails to reflect on the viewers’ face. If I go to a store to buy something and upon payment the shopkeeper fakes a smile at me, it would further make me uncomfortable about myself. There are chances I may go into self-introspection about my own appearance. The chapter has everything we have got to know about smile. I am pretty sure that there is nothing more one has to read to be fully convinced about the pros of having a smiley face always. I would strongly recommend this writing to as many people I could reach. Chapter- 4 “Smile” is a beautifully written piece which iterates the benefits of smiling. The chapter is perfectly weaved with facts and opinions on how a smile would light up the faces near you and bring out the best in you. After reading this chapter, I am fully convinced about the pros of smiling constantly. It is one of the gifts of joy we could give without expecting one in return (Korthagen, 2001).
