THE MASTERY OF METHODS- TED TALK - Many people feel fear and boredom from this topic One day, your boss rolls a dice. The dice lands on 3, he says that he will cut your payment by 20% because all of the employees that got a 3 on the dice had the same thing done to them. He later did a job satisfaction survey to see if employees were happy about the dice rolling and it came out fine. WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON’T USE RESEARCH METHODS - Objectivity: is the measurement really independent of the person assessing you? o no because boss was the only one to change and make this new procedure - Reliability: is the data reliable? o In this case, the dice rolling may be affecting my confounding variables like chance so this is not a reliable measurement - Validity: are we really measuring what we want to measure? o In that case, you are not really measuring anything just by rolling a dice. No relationship to performance and rolling a dice - We leave these aspects in our daily lives. IS THERE A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FREE SPEECH AND STANDARD DEVIATION: - SD is how individual opinions/ differences differ from the mean. o In the boss case, the graph showed job satisfaction and the data showed higher job satisfaction as it was looking at the mean. However, when you look at the SD, you can see that many employees were unhappy o People who were treated unfairly didn’t speak up, which skewed the survey results. - When you look at sampling, make sure you ask them about their opinion o If you are conducting a research on a drug treatment, make sure you ask your sample about it as they are the ones who are affected by the treatment...
