Description

EVALUATION OF POORLY WRITTEN ARTICLE

Nowadays, thousands of articles were written by authors from different background. But, there are plenty of them were a poorly written and do not have a clear presentations to the audience. In evaluating a poorly written article, we chose “Is Paedophilia is a crime or an illness” articles written by Dahlia Lithwick, an American-Canada journalist. This article is solely based on his opinions about whether this Paedophiles are actually undeserved a punishment from the authority. Unfortunately, we found out this writing actually lack some of the elements that being used in evaluating an article, which is logical, completeness and relevance.

First and foremost, a logical element in the article plays an important role in evaluating the quality of that writings in a nutshell. In contrast with logical, un logical means that it is not reasonable and the thinking is not consistent to the conclusions. An article should make sense step-by-step. For example,”due to prison overcrowding, child molesters are released each day into communities that no longer care whether pedophiles are sick or evil, so long as we throw away the key. This statement makes no sense as there was no evidence that prison ever released child molesters for overcrowding. It shows a non reasonable thinking as conclusions do not follow from the evidence. Hence, this is a poorly written article as there are missing of logical element in the article. Next, elements that also plays a decisive role of quality article evaluation is the completeness. Completely opposites, the incompleteness can be found when there are no sufficient points to support the argument. Its maybe the lack of statistical facts or research that weakened the author’s argument. As an example,“ advocates of the “disease” school say paedophilia is often the product of uncontrollable impulses that seem to respond to treatment (including castration, both surgical and chemical) particularly in conjuction with monitoring and behavioural therapy.” At first, we will see that this statement strongly supports author’s argument. But, there’s no supporting evidence of statistics, recent studies or any forms that reliable. For that reason, this is a poorly written article because the missing of the completeness elements.

The third elements that are significant in evaluation of the article is the relevance. But for this article, there’s an irrelevance that can be found and turned it to a poorly written article. The irrelevance occurs when the evidence given are not well connected and hardly to be understood by the audiences. For example, “Bibliophilia means the excessive love of books. It does not mean stealing books from libraries. Paedophilia means the excessive (sexual) love of children. It does not mean having sex with them.”. This analogy used for the arguments that are basically un logical and too far from the perspective of this discussions. Thus, the irrelevance analogy in this article made it a poorly written article. As a closure, there are three elements that being used to evaluate the quality of an article, which is the author’s purpose, completeness and relevance. The missing of any of these elements will affects the article, becoming a poorly written article and not a worth

reading materials for the audiences. The poorly written article can affects authors’ reputations as writings determines their determination. But, forgetting these elements surely affects their articles composition and credibility for any citation or personal reading....
