Description

ENGH 202-006; Rutledge May 2, 2021 Antonio Salieri/Amadeus:

Questions to Consider

1. Pay attention to the scene in which the very young Salieri prays about music and becoming a musician. What are his goals and what does he promise? He wishes to be a great composer and promises to abstain from sex, women, and devout himself to god. 2. Salieri responds differently to Mozart the person and Mozart's music. What is the difference between the responses? Salieri respects and is mesmerized by the music composed by Mozart but finds Mozart the person ridiculous, childish, vulgar and undeserving. 3. To say that Salieri resolves to avenge himself on Mozart (for what?) oversimplifies the complexity of his desire. Is Mozart the sole, or even the central focus of his resentment as the film progresses? No, it is not revenge on Mozart Salieri wishes to seek on, revenge but on God for giving Mozart what he believes he deserved instead of Mozart. 4. Leopold Mozart's motivations are relatively straightforward, but his first appearance (and some of the moments when Salieri acts) are accompanied by the Commendatore's motif (which also begins the overture to Don Giovanni). How are Leopold and Salieri both appropriately associated with that musical motif? Salieri uses Mozart’s feelings for his deceased father to trick him into composing Requiem, he uses a dark an ominous feel to haunt Mozart. 5. How does the film depict Salieri as both criminal and pitiable? Salieri cannot stand Mozart’s natural talent, and wants to be the best and knows that with Mozart in the picture he never will be. He is annoyed that someone so much younger and so silly has the talent he wishes he had....
